Part JRPG, part sidescrolling platformer, part shooter, part beat-em-up. All awesome.

User Rating: 8.5 | NIER PS3
NIer. An ugly game on the outside that holds within a beauty that other games only wish to possess. From the start you may be forgiven to think that it's some obscure ps2 HD remake that only came out in Japan first time round, for the graphics are incredibly dated, but get under the skin of the aesthetics and you will be drawn into Niers quest, alongside Grimwoir Weiss a talking floating book and an abnoxious hermafrodite. Yes. An hermafrodite. When you start the game it all resembles the typical JRPG. You walk around a village, talk to some people, etc, etc. Accept quests, do them, you know. It's onbly when you start doing these quests and start the main storyline that you begin to find that this game is a little bit special, as the most beautiful soundtrack begins to play and you open up into the big wide world, fighting all sorts of varied monsters. Armed with Grimwoire Weiss, Nier is able to pull off some pretty spectacular magic that truly kicks ass. Then, you might have to enter a dungeon type area, and the whole game shifts to an R-type shooter, shooting down corridors and dodging projectiles and firing your own through Weiss. This is the magic of Nier, that it just morphs into something different when you least expect it. Throw in some memorable boss battles and even more memorable characters and you have a game that will trap you for a very long time. This game has 4 endings, and I assure you, thaqt you won't stop till you have seen them all. This game just never gets boring, and it's unfortunate that it's so incredibly overrated as everyone should give this game a spin in their Ps3.
As I said before, the soundtrack is impressive, containing some of the most beautiful and memorable music I've ever had the pleasure to listen to whilst playing a game. Truly. The voice acting is Ok, the characters giving on the whole beleivable performances and managing to pull off the occasional dark humour quite well. The side quests more or less boil down to, go to next town and fetch certain item. This is probably one of the weaker aspects of the game, as you may find yourself at the beggining of the game doing these quests to earn money, and they can get a bit tedious, but still, it's not all bad. Their are a few mini-games here and there like fishing for example and you can even grow your own vegetables in your garden, some of them you have to grow carefully and mix them with other plants to grow new plants that you can sell for a very high price.

All in all, a great game that should not be missed.
