User Rating: 8.1 | Nobunaga no Yabou: Zenkokuban NES
Nobunaga’s Ambition is like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but with more character. The small handful of rulers available offer their own individual strengths, weaknesses, and military tendencies. The game’s focus on diplomacy, both good and sinister, allow the player to sympathize or despise every other state’s governor. When a state friendly to your own falls (you may have good ties due to a marriage between states) your urge to retaliate increases immensely. On the other hand, if a hated enemy narrowly survived an attack from a neighboring nation, you may feel compelled to finish the job. Military action isn’t a necessity. Marriages, gifts of gold or food, assassination attempts, uprisings, and sabotage all play their roles in Nobunaga’s Ambition. So does waiting. With only a few turns per season, years can pass before you’re able to wage a full-scale war. Plus, the music never changes (I do mean never) outside of battle sequences.
