I wasn't expecting much from an iPhone FPS, but I was wrong.
N.O.V.A. is a great iPhone game that will keep you clinging to your little portable device for a long time.
The game has a $6 price tag (currently) and may sound like a bit much, but it's worth every penny.
The game has a single player campaign, which is what you'll most likely be spending all of your time with this game on. It doesn't greatly focus on story. It focuses more on the pure action of shooting up aliens through dark corridors.
Speaking of aliens, many will tell you this is just a Halo clone on the iPhone. They're wrong, but they have a good reason to say so. It is much like Halo, with being an armored soldier with rechargeable shields shooting up aliens in space. But this game has its own little twists to it. Hacking terminals, for one, which is a fun little puzzle to go through. Going through the campaign, you will notice many things that make this game unique.
There aren't many guns in this game, which is a slight downside. The basic weaponry for you will become a standard Assault Rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol with unlimited ammo. Also, you can carry around 6 grenades. Your character can also shoot a little "energy blast" out of their palm, mainly for use when you're out of ammo and don't want to use a pistol.
The controls are surprisingly tolerable. They're not perfect, but they're great, considering that it's on the iPhone. The devs really made the controls about as simple and usable as possible.
Basically, there is an analog stick thing in the bottom left corner of the screen, which you use your left thumb to move your character around with.
Then you use your right thumb to aim your weapon anywhere at the screen.
There is a little red button at the bottom right of the screen, which you use to fire your weapon. This can get a little annoying, since you're using your right fingers to aim, and will have to stop to fire.
To make up for that, not a great deal of enemies go on-screen at the same time. You should be able to aim at enemies, move your thumb, and then fire.
The game's difficulty is good. It's not too frustrating, yet it's not a cakewalk through the whole game.
In gist, this is a great game. If you're looking for good, long-lasting fun on the iPhone, by all means pick up N.O.V.A.
