Okami is one of those games that make you restore your faith in videogames again, so that if you thought that all games are becoming "samey" then think again because you're about to be refreshed with this masterpiece that is Okami. For starters, you take on the role of the sun god Amaterasu incarnated in a white wolf called Shiranui, and your mission is to save the world from corruption, disease, decay, and darkness.
The first thing that you'll notice about Okami is the Innovative visuals that looks like an old Japanese painting that has come alive and vibrant which might put off some people that don't appreciate Japanese folklore but the truth is that it's one of those things that make this game look special and very beautiful.
The different back grounds in game are nicely drawn and beautiful and they range from vast fields to mountain caves and rich lively towns and small villages all full of different interesting characters to meet and mini games to try out, and moving around them and exploring them is a real joy. Which brings another issue which is moving Ammy (Short for Amaterasu) around which doesn't feel like any other character you have controlled before, Ammy's speed builds up as if you were driving an automatic car as long as you keep pressing in a certain direction that is. Of course you are armed with the right tools the fight the different evils that you'll encounter on your journey, the power of the art of painting, as silly as this might seem but that is the truth, actually that is one of the most amazingly creative and fun idea to appear in a video game, and taken straight from the six axis concept of the PS3. You press and hold the R1 button to change to drawing mode in which the screen changes into a drawing paper and a paint brush appears, the press the "square" button to drop the brush on the paper and move the left analog stick the start the drawing process, simple right? Well that's not all , you see there are different effects that appear in the real world to each item you draw for example: if you draw a circle in the sky at night time then once you let the R1 button, it'll change into day time with a sun in the sky. And another example during battles: if you draw a line on your enemies it'll have the effect of a slashing sword. There are more and more powers that you'll acquire during your game and they're all really cool and exciting, and the difficulty being relatively easy is a factor that actually increases the fun and charisma of the game.
All the sounds in Okami including the sound effects and music fit the classic Japanese atmosphere perfectly and the different characters in the game make awkward but funny sounds when they speak( just like in paper Mario on the N64),while the speech bubble that pops over their head explains what they're actually saying(oh and by the way this game must have had the best translation job ever in a video game).
The time you'll take to finish this game won't be less than thirty hours at least, and that's along time for any action game, the truth is this game is more of an action RPG than a simply action game, as a matter of fact, the closest game to this would be the Zelda series, although some people might consider this arguable, but believe me when I tell you that this game is as perfect as the Zelda series.
Capcom is hard at work in making more great games, but nobody expected this game to more that good, this is the most beautiful game on PS2, the visuals, sound, music, atmosphere, game play and the story are all really very beautiful, Okami is a real masterpiece.
