User Rating: 8.7 | Onimusha 3 PS2
Well, being an owner of an Xbox and a Playstation 2 I have the pleasure of being able to compare games across the 2 platforms. I waited for what seems like months for Ninja Gaiden to come out on Xbox - when it finally arrived I was sooo dissapointed. Yes, the action was great, but if I want beat em up action I will go play Soul Calibur 2. And it was quickly obvious that Ninja Gaiden was borrowing massively from the Onimusha series. Anyway........... I bought Onimusha 3 on a tip from a friend and it's probably the best $50 I've spent in several months. Not having been a huge fan of the series, I was somewhat hesitant in picking this one up - certainly I found the action in Onimusha 2 to be a little repetitive and the story was not compelling. This game has most of the things that I look for in a fantasy action adventure game. The combat is fast and fun without being overly complex - you have access to a few moves / weapons which increase over the course of the game. It's no spoiler to say that you get to play as more than 1 character in the game - this makes alot of difference as the characters are very different in their weapons and attacks. Gone is the silly 'present' system from Onimusha 2 - also the controls have *finally* been fixed so you can move your character using the left thumbstick and not the directional pad. A moveable camera would have been nice - but only a few times did I really notice it's absence. In terms of difficulty - I guess the *hardcore* crew would probably say that it verges on the easy side - that's a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preference. All in all I would say that the good points about this game are; Fast and furious action Minimum of running around *looking for stuff to do* No unfair boss fights Some excellent weapons that you can level up Superb story Several playable characters (you cant choose - the game will switch when req'd) The best custscenes ever. The bad points are; Lack of adjustable camera
