If you spent anytime in an arcade during the late 80’s and early 90’s, you will know the name Outrun. I used to be embarrassed to play it at the arcade because when you wrecked the cabinet would vibrate violently and I always felt that everyone was looking at me. When it was ported to the Genesis, I played it on the Sega Channel. By today’s standards, Outrun isn’t a remarkable game, but many of us still remember its arcade roots.

Outrun’s graphics are your typical Genesis variety. It is an early generation Genesis game, so they do look a little dated compared to later Genesis titles. Keeping that in context, the graphics are decent. Music and sounds are well ported from the arcade despite a few limitations of the Genesis hardware. Game play is simple arcade racing and not much more than that. During the course of the race the course branches off giving different routes to go. This provides some variety to the game play, but once you travel all the courses, there isn’t anything else to the game. An adept player will blast through this game in no time.

Outrun was a good game for its time. Players who didn’t grow up with the Genesis won’t find much enjoyment. If you do have memories of Outrun in the arcade and loved the Genesis, Outrun will fulfill your nostalgia. What Outrun boils down to is more of a relic to us old-schoolers and not much to the current gen of gamers out there.
