I really wanted to like this game, but the clunky interface and easy puzzles made loving this title impossible.
While this ended up being the exact control scheme the developers as Codemasters used, that was the only part of the game that impressed me. The game itself is filled with glitches which abruptly pull the player out of the experience, the puzzles lack inspiration or challenge, and the Minions, who are the true stars of the game, are dramatically weaker than their PS3, XB360, and PC counterparts.
To make things worse, I could never play for more than an hour before the game would freeze and I would have to start all over again. I've never had this problem in the year and a half that i have owned my Wii.
This is extremely disappointing since Dark Legacy was crafted exclusively for the Wii. Granted they do make good use of the motion sensor for throttling your minions and for giving commands, but it seems to me that they left the unique and challenging game play behind. The levels are uninspired, straight-forward, and not very challenging. Even if you fail a mission, there is no real sense of lost or disappointment. The power-up are easy to find, and there is no balance to the game at all. Your Overlord and Minions are either extremely powerful and can't die, or you are just normal and it still take a bit to kill you.
Despite all of these negatives, I think this game had the potential to be great. I like how they use the Wii remote, and the controls are intuitive and easy to pick up. The story is entertaining and quirky, and most of the dialogue and character interactions are hilarious.
Overall, this game is really a rental a best. Overlord could potentially have a great run on the Wii, but Dark Legend lacks the addictive game play and challenging puzzles of the original Overlord. Maybe next time Codemasters.
