A wargame classic
User Rating: 10 | Panzer General PC
When it was released back in 1994, Panzer General was heralded as a wargame that was at once appealing to hard-core wargaming buffs as well as more traditional, casual gamers. That summary still holds true today, and PG has indeed stood the test of time as a classic, accessible game. Combining the usual wargame tenets of hexes, supply, zones of control and historical WW2 settings with more RPG-like elements (carrying units through several missions and increasing their experience, or choosing which path to take during the campaign game) was a brilliant move that would make this game the best ever produced by SSI. While PG would spawn many sequels (and many of them very good in their own right), the original game remains the finest of all the "General" series, and remains the gold standard in turn-based historical strategy gaming. PG ranks as my favorite game for the PC, and a definite "desert island" game.
