Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was one of the Gamecube's best games of 2004. It is a clever RPG following the classic SNES game, Super Mario RPG, and the amazingly underappreciated N64 Paper Mario. The game features a great, engaging story with plenty of memorable and charismatic characters along the way. The battle system is easy to learn and quite brilliant compared to the battle systems of many RPGs. Being sucessful in battle requires strategy, good timing, and quick reflexes. The gameplay is satisfying from start to finish and manages to stay fresh and a lot of fun. The visuals of PM:TTYD give the game even more character and style than it already has. Everything is bright and fairly simple, with 2D objects in a 3D background. The unique style really brings the world to life and gives everything a smooth and satisfying look. The sound in PM:TTYD is composed of bouncy, catchy Mario music and great sound effects. Some may find the music a bit repetative from time to time, but for the most part it didn't bother me at all. The game will last the average gamer 30-40 hours, depending on the amount of side quests they choose to look into. When I finished the story, I was struck by a feeling of sadness that I would miss the world and the great characters. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is THAT good.
