If you like RPGs and own a Gamecube or Wii, this game will provide hours of entertainment. However, it's very easy.

User Rating: 8.6 | Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door GC
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (PMTTYD) creates a richly detailed world inhabited by an extensive cast of Mario characters as well as many new faces.

Graphics
The graphics are excellent, a blend of 2D and 3D cell-shaded images lovingly assembled by the creators. It is obvious that a lot of time and energy was given to the appearance of the game. Everything is bright and colorful, as is typical of a Mario game. Doors open and building interiors appear by unfolding, secrets peel away, and everything seems to be made of paper (even flame effects). There are small visual cues to use certain items, powerups, or abilities throughout the game that make puzzles interesting. The imagery of the game is truly unforgettable and unique.

Sound
The sounds are suitable, if a bit drab. Mario theme music and mood music rises and falls depending on the situation, and audio cues to health and impending enemy attack are useful. Sound effects are a bit lame, but typical of a Mario game. Most of the music and sound effects could be emulated on a 16-bit system like the Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis.

Gameplay
The game plays similar to Tales of Symphonia, with a town view you can walk around and talk to characters in and enemies that you can avoid. The battles are always interesting, with a variety of enemies that each require different tactics to defeat. The action occurs in semi-turn based combat, but as time passes the "audience" gets ornery. Every battle has an audience, and the audience plays a key role in the game. Perform well and the audience size increases and fills star power, allowing for more impressive attacks. Do poorly and the audience leaves, filling the meter more slowly. You are able to upgrade your characters with "badges", which are a pool of points that you can assign to different badges you collect that allow you to use special attacks, raise your attack or defense power, make sound fx, raise you hit points, and more. You will also gain abilities and powers as you progress through the game.

Concluding Remarks
Role-playing games for the Gamecube and Wii are - thus far - sparse. It is unlikely that PMTTYD will satisfy adult gamers. It is far too easy for veteran role-players, despite the amount of content. However, younger gamers and fans of the Mario franchise will love the depth and variety of this game, which will surely become a classic.
