A cute army fighting an evil enemy and some very cool giant monsters! What a great concept….so what the hell went wrong?

User Rating: 6.5 | Patapon PSP
Patapon is a game where you use the beet of the music to move and command your army. It's a simple concept but its gimmick got in the way of being truly fun! It's a game that requires that you hear what is happening and you can not be distracted or you loose the beat. This mean you can't play anywhere that is noisy or has a lot of people walking around. You can't play in the car because the movement might through off your beet. Also there is no Pause.

Where to start? Dificulty….this game is incredible difficult. Do not be fooled by its cute cartoony look, this game is not for kids! It is a true Hard Core Game that is very challenging.

The Art style is amazing, this game gets a 10 for pure visual and sound design. Beautiful colors and fantastic use of color makes this a great visual experience. The music and sound is enjoyable and fun.

Game Play: You press different button combinations to create War Drum Beats that command your army. XXXO will make them Move forward, XXOX will make them attack, and so on. If you get the beet perfectly for 9 beats then your army will go into FEVER mode where they do a ton more damage. If you ever brake the beat then the FEVER goes away. You also have special miricals that you can activate when you are in FEVER mode. This make your FEVER go away but activates a special ability that you will need to perform to get past certain parts of the game.

Army: You have lots of different types of Patapons that you can bring into battle, Melee Warriors, Spear Warriors, Archers, Heavy Warriors, Cavalry and Musicians. Patapons are created by spending "Ka-Ching" (Money) and combining certain items. There are different colored Patapons with their own strengths depending on the items used to make them. This is very cool, but each formula is a mystery so you have to get a Walk through or have a good memory.

Items: There are all kinds of items in the game and this is one of the ways that they failed to make this game truly great! If they had made it so you could go back to early parts of the game to find items or at least craft items from the other items you can find, it would have made it so much more fun to build up your army.

You can always go back to make more Ka-Ching and find some types of crafting items. You also unlock new Patapons that go back to your Village that you can give special items to play a mini-game to get other rare items for more crafting, but you cant make weapons or items your Patapon can use. The real problem with going back is it takes so long to make any money that its not very much fun and gets dull real fast.

In short it is a cute game that looks like it would be good for kids, but its so hard only the most hard core of players will ever finish it. And it's a completely un-portable game only available on a portable system.

It makes me sad because this game had so much potential with some very minor changes it could have been a 10, but in the end it became to repetitious and lack of a difficulty setting made it to hard for casual play.

My score is a: 6.5
