One of the best games of the year

User Rating: 8.5 | Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie PS2
When Peter Jackson released his big film King Kong Ubisoft also released a game on it. There is an old saying that movie based games are rubbish but this game is certainly one of the better ones.

You can play as a man called Jack or a huge Gorilla named Kong. Most of the levels will have you playing as Jack and its a shame that there isnt more levels with Kong. In the levels with Jack you will be looking from a first person view. One of the good things is that there are no little distractions on the screen like health meters or ammo meters. Its just you and Skull Island. There are many weapons to use with Jack. You can find many spears on the island witch do the least damage. Then theres guns. You can use a small pistol, a thompson, a shotgun and a sniper rifle. The pistol does the least damage out of all the guns. The thompsons bullets may not do a ton of damage but the rate of its fire makes up for that. The shotgun is very powerful especially from close range and the sniper rifle is also very powerful with good long range but slow rate of fire. The creatures you will have to kill will be things like megapedes, giant crabs, flying bats and most dangerously the dinosaurs. The bats are the easiest to kill. With just one shot from your small pistol they will be dead. The dinosaurs can vary in size. There are the small ones and then theres the large ones that can kill you in an instant. During your travels through Skull island you will a lot of the time be with your team. Firstly theres Anne who gets taken away by kong realy early in the game. Then theres Carl, Hayes and Jimmy. Hayes is the man who will provide you with the fire arms. He will give you the Thompsons and snipers. When you are going through the island there will be a lot of dangers for your team aswell as you. If one of your team members like Hayes is being bitten by a creatures you must shoot the animal and protect him. So its important to look out for everyone else aswell as yourself. The King Kong levels are very fun indeed. Unfortunaltey there arent nearly as enough Kong levels as there are Jack levels. In the kong levels you must fight huge dinosaurs and protect Anne. This includes brute force fighting and totaly destroying your opponent. To finish off an opponent you have to use the special finishing move. This is the jaw breaker where you grab the dinosaurs jaw and snap it open. Its a really gruesome but satisfying effect.

The graphics and sound on King Kong are some of th best I have seen in a long time. The graphics are so clear and brilliant. On the film Skull island is a scarey dull place. But on the game the graphics make Skull island look rather beautiful. The game does tend to slow down now and again when alot is happening but this is just a minor issue and nothing too serious. Carl is played by Jack Black in the film and the character model of Carl looks mazingly real. Infact all the other character models look really great. The sound is also top notch. The voice actors are superb. This is because they are done by the cast of the film. The voice talent adds more lisence to the game from the film. Another thing to the sound is that you can hear Jack panting when he has been running for a while. The sound adds a lot to the atmosphere too.

King Kong isnt the longest game in the world but its long enough to keep you playing for a week at least. A lot of reviews across the web said it was way too short but I think differently. The game will give about 10 hours of gameplay. Once completed there isnt anything left to do on the game. But its fun while it lasts.

Overall King Kong on the PS2 is definently worth your time. Fans of the movie who like games will love this. A great game to see the end of 2005.
