the controls are very strange

I do not see how the controls could have been improved for this game. If there is one testament to the perfection of the GameCube controller, this game is it. I would not be surprised at all if Miyamoto altered the controller to fit this game better. It certainly shows us all what that crazy little “Z button” is for. It’s not a button for tapping; it’s a button for toggling! It’s used here to toggle between camera angles. The A button, which plucks and tosses Pikmins, get the most use, while the C Stick is used for commanding those little Pikmin helpers. The left and right triggers are ingeniously put to use on the camera system, which is by far more advanced than any other system previously. It has to be experienced to be believed.

Olimar, seemingly from the planet Wussy, cannot fight well and carry stuff on his own. He needs the help of those tiny little Pikmin slaves. Your job is to control Olimar and control his Pikmin buddies to do his bidding. It works flawlessly, but after all it is very simple in the first place, so I’m not going to give it much credit. All you really have to do is bring enough of the right Pikmin to an object and Bam! -they do what they are supposed to do.

The gameplay reaches its limits quickly as the obstacles are easily overcome by about 30 Pikmin or more and little time. There should have been more time and resource consuming projects for the Pikmin to work on. That way Olimar could attend to other things (raising more Pikmin, assigning more Pikmin to projects), while groups of Pikmin worked on others. This could have extended the gameplay a bit as well. It is just too bad I do not work for Nintendo.
