>Graphics 7/10
I have to give them a little credit here. The camera angles following the ball makes for a helpful experience. And the parts are nicely re-produced in 3D. The addition of glare on the glass is a nice touch. However, in my book, the originals they are trying to reproduce aren't much to look at.
>Sound 3/10
Crave did a good job, it seems, re-producing the sounds the original machines made. But in the pinball games presented here (mostly from the 50s-80s), the sound emanated by the things were not that impressive.
>Gameplay 3/10
They didn't seem to get the mechanics quite right. I like playing real pinball machines and I'm used to the speed and reaction of the ball against platforms. I feel this game really fails here. The ball moves around in a smooth, fluid way which feels polished. However, it rolls exceptionally slow (and unlike in Pro Pinball there is no option to change this) -- so I don't feel like I am developing realistic pinball skills and I don't feel like I am playing with real physics -- one of the main reasons to experience pinball.
I suppose this is the perfect title for someone who grew up playing pinball since the 50's. However, I feel these fall short by today's games' standards.
Crave Entertainment has done a fantastic job replicating the original experience of these original machines -- I just don't get the impression the original machines were that great to begin with.
I am a big fan of Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey for the PS1. The original game inside Pro Pinball is just so neat - great sound effects, ramps, targets, and table modes. In Pro Pinball, I feel like I'm really enjoying something I would pay a quarter to go at.
Pin Pinball Hall of Fame: the Gottlieb Collection, I feel like I am taking a history lesson -- and I can't wait until the bell rings and it's over.
