User Rating: 8 | Pitfall II: The Lost Caverns ARC
Pitfall II is the sequel to the very popular Pitfall. Pitfall II: Lost Caverns stays true to the gameplay of the original but greatly expands the scope of the environment, as Harry now descends deep into the catacombs. The screen scrolls vertically, unlike the original which did not scroll at all. Like the first game, you have to reach the edge of the screen to move it over to the next horizontal area. While similar in many ways to the original, Lost Caverns featured numerous changes from the original. Pitfall Harry is no longer bound by the 20-minute time limit. The game has a unique feature, which back in the 1980s, was rare for any video game, in which Harry has unlimited lives, thereby making it impossible to "lose" the game. When Harry makes contact with a dangerous creature, he does not die. Rather, he loses points as he floats back to the last continue point, marked with a red cross. There are numerous crosses throughout the cavern, and he is transported to the last cross he touched. Pitfall II has 27 vertical levels, along with eight screens across, which was pretty large for the time. One of the most fun aspects of the game is the balloons that allow Harry to float to new areas. Pitfall II was not nearly as popular as the original, despite all of the upgrades and advances. Many people have never even heard of this game. If you enjoy the nostalgic value of the original, you should try playing the sequel.
