All Hype and expectations, but plain shallow.

User Rating: 6.4 | Playboy: The Mansion PS2
With all the hype and expectations, Playboy: The Mansion offers but a shallow experience. In this M-rated game, players assume the role of Hugh Hefner, the multi-millionaire behind the Playboy Enterprise. Take his role and slowly build the Playboy Empire with all the beautiful women and sophisticated lifestyle. The background of this game sounds very promising, but alas, it is far from perfect. WARNING: Sexual content not for minors: There are 2 forms of game play that you can choose. One is the "Mission" campaign where you follow a series of linear events and missions, and then you work towards a certain goal. In the other "Freeform" mode, you are playing mostly on your own decisions and tactics. You play as Hef and starting from scratch you will have to build the wonderful Playboy Mansion as we know it. You basically publish monthly magazines and based on the content of your magazine, you gain revenues and rewards. Playing as the "Ultimate Bachelor" is interesting, but the missions are often stereo-typed and repetitive. No matter what you do, the basic idea is to employ high rating staffs, high rating models and then run parties for certain celebrities in order to get their cooperation(Such as asking for a cover-photo and interview) and that's it. Initially things are fun, but slowly you will see the silliness of the game. The models all have the same voice, and the models all have the same face! In addition, the ward robe choices are repetitive. You run the photo sessions yourselves, and you can choose the angle, place and girl that you want to take. The girls all pose in a similar manner, and there are no personal traits or unique characteristics to them, except for color differences and bust sizes. Things start to get boring when all you do is repeat the same procedure over and over again, to produce a monthly magazine. With the money that you have earned from the magazine, you expand your mansion, buy more sofas or stereos or even beds and furnish the mansion with all sorts of decoration. Don't get me wrong here; this game has its enjoyable moments. Take for instance the ability to hook up with the models and make them your girlfriend, and you can fire and hire any one you please. Employ bunnies to entertain your guests, and for the adult part, have sex with the girls after you have managed to sweet talk them. This game fails in the realistic compartment where all the girls will have sex with their panties on. I am not asking for close-up or detailed action here, but it would have been better if they have made it in a more realistic way. I just can't comprehend the idea of all the girls having sex with their under wears on. Options of making out, kissing or hugging are available too. In the celebrity's compartment, you make friends with known personalities such as mayors, rock stars, writers and etc. With the professional relationship you can talk them into investment or even join the "inner circle" of your friends where they will usually turn up in your mansion the moment you want them to. Sometimes they would not be available, however. Each and every person in this game has their dislikes/likings. Try to strike a topic that disgusts them and you will end up in a fight or argument. You can also introduce celebrities to your models to make them happy, or try and fix a bad relationship between two people. Conclusion: For Sims-lovers, this game is worth a rent. For all the guys who have always wanted to be the "Ultimate Bachelor" I would suggest rent it too. I won't recommend a purchase.
