Pokemon returns on the console and it is a bit different.
Good:
+ Story Mode is definitely a new approach
+ Non-linear + Shadow Pokemon is an interesting idea
+ Nice music
+ Mount Battle
Bad:
- Dated graphics
- Battles can take forever
- Only 1 gym battle
- Can only catch Shadow Pokemon
- No voiceovers
The Story Mode has you take the role as Wes. You are no longer some random kid who wants to be the Pokemon master. Wes must capture Shadow Pokemon and purify them. The Story Mode is non-linear so if you don't want to go to the next event, fine. You can just keep training. The Shadow Pokemon are definitely interesting. They have this powerful attack but if you overuse it, the Shadow Pokemon goes into Hyper Mode and you can't control it anymore. So, strategy is key. The music is definitely better from Pokemon Stadium. It is nice to hear the orchestral music when in a battle. There are tunes still stuck in my head. Mount Battle is a place where you fight 100 trainers. Things get harder through each 10 battles so it will be difficult and is definitely rewarding when you beat all 100 trainers.
The graphics are pretty dated and it looks like N64. The Zubat looks very similar to when it was in Pokemon Stadium 2. If you are not uber powerful, then the boss battles will take a long time especially when you have to try to capture their Shadow Pokemon. If you are expecting this to be like Pokemon on the GBA, then you are going to be disappointed. There is only 1 gym battle and you can't catch Wild Pokemon. Also, there are no voiceovers at all. It is all text and Pokemon hasn't have a game with voiceovers in ages!
Overall, only worth getting if you are familiar with Pokemon.
