The sequel to the impressive Red, Blue & Yellow versions of Pokemon this game is by far the most in depth.
For any Pokemon addict this is a must have, but what changes have Game Freak put in to make sure its not just a repetitive bore? Well the introduction of 100 new pokemon of course!
The land of Pokemon has become a much bigger adventure then anybody thought, with the introduction of a new island, known simply as Johto. This is where yourself, a would be Pokemon Trainer is assigned his first Pokemon by Professor Elm (Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile being the choices for these versions of the game) and from then you go and do battle.
The graphics have improved for the Game Boy Color version, with more thought put into the areas which make the battles easier to comprehend which just adds to the game. Despite the concept being the same the better looking towns and cities make it seem almost new, and the fact it is based in a totally new environment makes you almost forget the originals.
In Johto the aim of the game is similar to the first set of games. That is to go around various areas of the Johto world and fight with Gym Leaders to fight the Elite 4 and become the champion of the Pokemon world.
Add to this the usual antics of Team Rocket will be around to keep yourself and your collection of Pokemon in tip top shape before the ending battles.
The great part about this game is the added bonus after defeating the Elite 4. Once your are the Pokemon Master you get to access Kanto, the area the previous game was based upon and you face your old friends Brock, Misty and of course, Ash. Along the way you gain another 8 Badges from the Gym Leaders and then face Ash (Who is more than capable of handling his own)
Apart from the Gameplay itself the game has had a few new additions given to it. For example the world now has 17 types of different pokemon with Dark and Steel Pokemon added to the mix.
Something else entirely new to Pokemon, and the handheld world is the Real Time affect obvious in the game. At the beginning your asked to enter the time and date as well as your name - this is so the game knows when its day and night and changes accordingly. This has more relevance later on in the game with certain areas open at certain times on certain days that offer competitions to collect different types of pokemon and the trainer with the rarest wins a prize.
Two other new features make their way to the game. One of them being the Pokegear. This splits up all the various things equipped over time into 4 different bags, making it easier for you to find what your looking for. The 4 pockets are devised into Items (Such as Potions) Pokeballs, HM/TM's and Key Items.
The last additional feature to the game is the ability to breed Pokemon, which is sometimes needed when certain Pokemon are not found in either game. For example a Male & Female Pikachu are needed to breed a Pichu.
So despite being a similar sort of game to the Red, Blue & Yellow series Game Freak have added so many new elements to its game that it makes sure you dont get bored or find it repetitive.
