A Must Play

Puzzles? Check. Physics? Check. Witty and cruel robot? Check.
Portal is quite the unique game.

Story: You are the test subject for a science organization called Aperture Science. You awake in a testing chamber to a computerized voice named GLaDOS. She informs you you are the next subject to go through their testing and if you make it through all the tests you will be rewarded with cake. You are given no other information about your character.

Gameplay: The test chambers revolve around the use of the portal gun. There is a blue portal and an orange portal. Going through one makes you come out the other and speed is maintained between portals. At first the portal gun can only shoot the blue portal while the orange is placed for you. The puzzles often involve finding a way to press a switch to open a the door to the next chamber. While this is going on, GLaDOS periodically guides you and offers other humorous dialogue. The puzzles, of course, get more difficult as you progress requiring physics, timing, and planning.

Graphics: Portal has very nice graphics, though the scenery doesn't change all that much in the game. Everything is nice and crisp if your computer can handle it.

Sound: Most of the time there is no music, only sound effects. But this suits the environment of the game, and the music comes in at suitable dramatic parts.

Characters: GLaDOS and your character are the only ones in this game, and your character is silent. However, GLaDOS's dialogue really makes the game so enjoyable and amusing. I never get tired of listening to her.

Length: I beat the game in 3 hours, so don't expect a long drawn out game.

Replay: There are various achievements and bonus levels to play along with multiple ways to solve some puzzles which makes this games replay value pretty good.

Overall: 9, simply because of how short it is! This game is highly original, fun, humorous, and a pleasure to play.
