This remake definitely does the original Prince of Persia justice...

I played the original Prince of Persia on my Commodore 64. I'll never forget those hours and hours I spent trying to finish the damn game in 60 minutes. I don't think I ever actually did it. But I remember the amazing graphics (for the time) with the Prince's smooth animation, and the huge jumps, spikes, potions and the mirror prince. All in all, it was one of the best games of the era.

And this remake is simply stunning. The graphics are very well done. And while they are generations ahead of the original (played in 16 colors with dithering, if I remember correctly!) they don't take away from the gameplay, which when playing in the mode closest to the classic version, is just as frustrating as the original. Oh, the memories!

But the game, thankfully, does have options which means that casual gamers will be able to see the whole game. Level progress can be saved, and the 60 minute limit can also be lifted.

The game controls well, and are very responsive. I worried about this, because the original required very deft hands and precise timing. This version does as well, but I never found myself cursing the controller as I have in other Xbox Live Arcade games.

This game has serious nostalgia value for those of us old enough to have played the original. But the gameplay holds up very well--enough so that new gamers will find it well worth the ten dollars. It's nice to be able to recommend a classic Arcade game for more than just the nostalgia value. This game is damn fun. Play it. Now.
