"Human beings need a lot of things to feel alive. Family...Love...Sex. But we only need one thing... To actually be alive. We need a beating heart. When our heart is threatened... We respond in one of two ways. We either run...Or...We attack. There's a scientific term for this: Fight...Or flight. It's instinct...We can't control it. Or can we?"
These are the few, but still immensely powerful words, that lead us off into the 80-minute long finale. These few words have such an impact on all of us, and these words describe the whole season finale.
It all starts with Izzie yelling at George, whether he is going to stay and help her, or whether he is not. But because she's family, he stays. Then the picture rapidly changes, and we see Dr. Burke lying on the concrete floor, bleeding, hurt. It all fades out. For a moment, all hope seems lost. Then the adrenaline comes back with a rush. The four interns are talking, not listening to each other, thinking what their next move should be, after Izzie successfully cut Denny's LVAD wire. This is the first scene (of which many are to follow), where you see them as family. The next storyline is introduced: Chief's niece is brought to the hospital, after having excruciating pains during sex. But the chief cannot deal with this right now, but when could he ever deal with family? The hospital always came first, tells him his wife, but right now, it's got to be the other way around.
After that, you see Derek and Richard exchanging what's on their minds. In a dark, quiet room, Richard tells Derek all about his affair, how his wife knew of it, and stayed with him anyway. He also talks openly about his alcohol addiction. Now it's Derek's turn. He tells him, that he cannot get perspective around the fact that he might have to operate on Dr. Burke. They leave. In the next scene, Dr. Bailey notices, that all her "suck-ups" have disappeared. We know why, but she doesn't, so she sets out on a mission. Then Burke and Cristina have a moment alone, and he asks her, whether he should let Derek operate, and maybe lose control his whole hand, or if he should wait, and maybe lose control of his whole hand. She doesn't know what to tell him.
Dr. Bailey, who finally found all her "suck-ups", tells Izzie off, after seeing what she's done, and fires her for now. "From now on, you will no longer be a surgical intern here at Seattle Grace; from now on you are a visitor, Izzie." But she has no real proof that it was Izzie. Then you see George, Cristina, Izzie and Meredith sitting against a wall, being on their time-out. This is another scene, which shows how they are a family, and stick together, through the good and bad times. Denny's heart transplant goes well, his new heart is beating. He finally is a free man again. Preston whereas is having difficulties keeping his hand from shivering and shaking. The Chief orders all five of Baileys interns to his office, and they all stick up for Izzie, by saying that each of them was the one who cut the wire, except Alex, who doesn't rat Izzie out, though. Denny asks Izzie to marry him, but she has to think about that.
Since no one told the Chief who cut the wire, they are all at his command; his way of punishing them, thinking that one will not last this torture and tell him who cut the wire. His only one wish is, that they organize the best prom there has ever been and ever will be for his of cancer dying niece. He calls in all the interns separately, and again, no one breaks. Each of them has their own reason of why not, but mainly to protect Izzie from getting kicked out of the program. Next you see Izzie saying "Yes" to Dennys proposal. Meanwhile, Doc is at the vet being put to sleep, because he has no chance of staying alive; the cancer has spread to his brain. Meredith and Derek are there, and when Meredith speaks of how the dog actually was only hers for a very short time, she speaks of Derek, who touched her hand a few moments before.
The next scene is at the prom, which was thrown especially for Cammie, the Chiefs niece. You see the Chief dancing with her, and George and Callie have a scene in the hallway, where George tells her, that he wants "I love you" to mean something, when he says it. Then you see Meredith dancing with Finn, and talking about the future. Derek is dancing with Addison, but only looking at Meredith. She feels so overwhelmed by this, that she excuses herself. Derek follows. They have an argument in an empty room, which leads to having sex in an empty room, which now is filled with love, passion and tenderness. At that time, Denny's dying. He's having a stroke, and nobody's there while he's dying. Izzie comes only a few minutes too late, and blames herself for not saving him, if she hadn't only changed her dress three times. It ends with Izzie quitting her job as an intern, and Meredith choosing between her McDreamy and her McVet.
Family, love, sex, beating hearts, it's all there if you look closely.
