Blunders

Here it is – my first ever blog on tv.com. Mini hurrah. What to write about? Well, this is what I’m NOT going to write about: myself. If you were hoping to find out how I spent my day, I hate to disappoint you, but disappoint you I must. Because, you see, my comings and goings on this particular day are of little interest to me let alone anybody else (I imagine). Maybe some other time. This week I decided to ramble on about how blissfully ignorant our favorite TV writers can be and some of their comical (and not so comical) blunders. I’ve been thinking about the subject extensively prompted by re-runs of some of my favorite shows. First came Will & Grace’s Cowboys and Iranians (8x17). Now, I love Will & Grace. When the show came out (no pun intended) it was ground-breaking and dealt with a subject long avoided on network television. How disappointing, then, to see this ground-breaking outspoken show deal so sloppily with the issue of political correctness. In the episode Grace who’s overcome with the spirit of social responsibility hires Pam, an Iranian who turns out to be much less scrupulous when it comes to responsibility of any kind. In fact she’s a lazy, big-headed, exploitative b****. Of course Pam turns out to be Jewish, hence freeing Grace of any social obligations she might have had; Grace doesn’t feel she ought to be benevolent to her own people. The problem with this episode is that the character of Pam is utterly contrived. The whole premise of the joke is that she essentially pretends to be something she’s not, thereby causing much confusion. But unfortunately her Iranian identity is so unrealistic it’s almost cringe-worthy. The effect: the episode is outright offensive if you’re Iranian and utterly ridiculous if you’re not. This is PC at its most bizarre. To be continued… Any thoughts? Feel free to PM me.
