Am I late?

Sorry for the delay in getting this second edition of my blog online, won't happen again, I promise! This week, seeing as FOX has decided to kick off this years season earlier than usual, I'll be running down their schedule, telling you what's great and what's this years point pleasant out of all the pilots I've seen. But first, last week was a very sad week for the people of PIXAR. They tragically lost one of their most valuable assets - Joe Ranft. The head of story at the animation genius' studio was tragically killed at the age of 45. he's been behind all the stories from PIXAR and also worked on Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King as well as voicing Heimlich the caterpillar in A Bug's Life, Wheezy the squeeky penguin in Toy Story 2 and the French shrimp in Finding Nemo. He will be sorely missed and my thoughts go out to his friends and family. To find out more about the man check this out ------------------ NEW SEASON TV PREVIEW As FOX have decided to get a jump on the new season before they start their sports coverage I'm going to start with them. Last season: Hits such as House, 24 and American Idol shared their room with dirty, dirty flops such as Point Pleasant, Life on a Stick and the Rebel Billionaire. This season: FOX always takes risks and this year is no different! Bones. Tues 8pm. Sept 13. This procedural crime drama starring David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel Is about Temperance Brennan, a Forensic Anthropologist(Deschanel) who 'reads' bones to help solve crimes that Agent Booth(Boreanaz) is investigating. Booth, surprise, surprise, doesn't believe in science and the two often but heads. The pilot was very run of the mill. While it wasn't bad there just wasn't anything to set it apart from all the CSI clones that turn up every year. Brennan seems to have have been written with the character description 'spunky' and 'kick-ass' drilled into her. The supporting characters range from boring to moderately interesting and the first case is quite predictable. Also, the 3D recreation software, that they use to instantly see who the victim is, is very cheesy. Still, it passes the time and Deschanel is interesting enough. rating: *** up against: According to Jim + Rodney, NCIS, The Biggest Loser, Gilmore Girls survival chances: *** Head Cases. Wed 9pm. Sept 14. Chris O'Donnell stars as Jason Payne, a star lawyer just released from a mental institution after having a breakdown when his wife kicked him out. He can't find work on his release but is latched onto by Shultz(Adam Goldberg- you know, Chandler's crazy room-mate), also a just-released patient and lawyer(what are the odds!) and after Jason can't get rid of him they decide to set up their own law firm for the 'underdogs'. This show doesn't have much of a chance. O'Donnell's not been A-list for a while now and this over shmaltzy lump won't do him any favours. The premise (great lawyers who are crazy - har, har!) will soon wear thin and the estranged dad thing is seen in every other tv show. Goldberg is ok but I can't stop thinking of his role in Friends, and this isn't far removed from that. Pass. rating: ** up against: Lost, Criminal Minds, E-Ring, Veronica Mars, Related survival chances: * Killer Instinct. Fri 9pm. Sept 23 I haven't seen this show but the word isn't good. The series follows the 'Deviant Crime' unit as they investigate the 'most aberrant criminals'. There's a reported high level of violence towards women which will probably put a lot of people off and there's a quote on FOX's website that says 'the 'monsters' are everyday people, hidden in plain sight - and that, in each of us, a monster may lurk just beneath the surface.' So, happy, happy all the way then! rating: N/A up against: Hope & Faith + Hot Properties, Threshold, 3 Wishes, WWE Smackdown, Reba + Living with Fran survival chances: * Kitchen Confidential. Mon 8:30pm. Sept 19. This show based on chef Anthony Bourdain's best-selling autobiography centres around Jack Bourdain(Bradley Cooper), a chef who's made it to the top only to let it go to his head and fall to the bottom(with a little help from drink and drugs). Luckily he get's a second chance as head chef at a top restaurant and sobers up too. After an initiation of fire during which he has to hastily assemble kitchen staff of old colleagues and satisfy a full restaurant on his first night, Jack begins his climb to the top again. From Darren Starr(Sex & The City) & Dave Hemingson(Just Shoot Me), the Pilot is very entertaining and has managed to assemble a very likable cast including Xander himself, Nicholas Brendon, Jamie King and Bonnie Somerville. The stand out though is without a doubt Bradley Cooper as Jack, who finally gets a lead role in a good show. The show is witty and shows a lot of potential but has competition in the timeslot. Time will tell... rating: **** up against: Wife Swap, How I Met Your Mother, Surface, All of Us, 7th Heaven survival chances: *** Prison Break.[MUST WATCH!] Mon 9pm. Premieres Aug 29 with double episode starting at 8pm This show about a man(Wentworth Miller) who gets himself sent to prison to break his brother(Dominic Purcell) out who's on death row after being falsely accused of killing the vice president's brother is from Director Brett Ratner and has the potential to be the next 24. The race against time theme isn't a rip off though, it's more spread out and the various stories have a lot more layers to them. It also mixes the other characters, prisoners and outsiders, very well leaving lots of room for expansion in the future. You'll realise after you pick your jaw up off the floor after the twist at the end of the first hour that this is going to be the biggest new show of this season. Miller is also probably going to be the next big thing. Do not miss! rating: ***** up against: Monday Night Football, Two and a Half Men + Out of Practice, Las Vegas, Girlfriends + Half & Half, Just Legal survival chances: **** Reunion. Thurs 9pm. Sept 8 Reunion centres around a group of friends with each episode recounting 1 time period of each year from 1986 up until their 20 year reunion in 2005 and the funeral of one of them, murdered by another. The show has got plenty of cliches from the love triangle to the 'we'll be friends forever' group of people. It does add a nice twist to all this by you knowing one of them murders another but unfortunately it's too little too late. The characters just aren't that interesting enough and the script is too cheesy too much of the time. I just can't imagine myself wanting to stick out 19 more episodes just to find out who killed and was killed. rating: **1/2 up against: The Nightstalker, CSI, The Apprentice, Cuts + Love Inc., Everwood survival chances: ** The War at Home. Sun 8:30pm. Sept 11. Micheal Rapaport stars as a married father trying to control his out of control kids while getting along with his wife who's a bit out spoken too. I haven't seen a full episode yet but I'm not quite sure what to make of this show. One minute it's pulling out some cracking jokes and being well observed, the next minute it's making really lazy jokes about who's slept with who. Rapaport is very underappreciated so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt so far but it's skating thin. rating: *** up against: Extreme Makeover:HE, Cold Case, The West Wing, Charmed survival chances: *** Rest of the schedule: FOX will hope for further success with it's sunday night animation but let's hope for quality improvements in The Simpsons and American Dad which quite frankly don't make the grade at the moment. Arrested Development will hopefully gather more viewers but, unfortunately I can't see it happening. Stacked probably won't last long and That 70's Show will finish this year no doubt. The O.C will loose viewers to it's competition(Alias, Survivor, Joey, Everybody Hates Chris & Smallville) and we may see it struggling by January. Malcolm in the Middle and Bernie Mac will probably slip away quietly and House will rise to become one of the network's flagship shows. Strong this season: Prison Break, House and 24 Avoid like 'Point Pleasant': Killer Instinct, Stacked, Head Cases Dark Horse: Kitchen Confidential ---------------------- WHAT'S HOT THIS WEEK Weeds continues it's excellent first season with the appearance of Nancy's brother-in-law who stirs everything up straight away... Showtime Monday 10pm If you haven't been watching Entourage make sure you catch this weeks penultimate episode. HBO Sunday 10pm Also on HBO Sunday is their big bound-to-get-nominated-for-Emmys-anyway drama Rome. Definitely worth a look. HBO Sunday 9pm And finally, as I mentioned above, don't miss the biggest new show for this season, Prison Break! 2 hour premiere, FOX Monday 8pm ---------------------- That's it! A big Blog this week but Early next week I'll be posting my review of last season so check back and don't forget to leave any comments or suggestions! til next week, "hug it out!" *aylward*

Oh, for Blog's sake!

Well, I've only gone and blogged it haven't I? I've finally got my blogging ass in gear and sorted my blogging blog! What? Too much blog? Sorry, just one more?............... BLOG! Welcome to the Bi-weekly-whenever-the-hell-I-like Blog from me, aylward. As you may have worked out this is my first blog(sorry, no more) where you'll find my rantings and mumblings, reviews and previews about the latest in TV land. As well as general ramblings about what I've been up to. Of course there's always the chance that no-one will read this at all and all my ramblings will float off into the ether but as Robin Williams once said: "Reality is just a crutch for people who can't handle drugs". Think about it... In the coming few weeks I'll be offering up my opinions on the latest offerings from the US fall season including previews and reviews of 24 behind bars(Prison Break), Eddie Cibrian's massive dimples new role in Invasion, women so hot they burn in Supernatural, the mighty Chris Rock in Everybody Hates Chris, HBO's latest big Emmy winner (you know it'll happen!), Rome, Showtime's excellent new 'Weeds' and more. As well as looks at favourites Lost, Veronica Mars, Alias, House and (finally) the return of Nip/Tuck. Then I'll be rating and recommending nearly all the new shows and telling you who to look out for. But in next week's entry I'll be looking back at last season's big shows & what's happening to them this year as well as the disappointments and the suprises. And pretty much everything else good and Point Pleasant about it... In the meantime, if you haven't checked out UPN's Veronica Mars(Whedon's a fan now!) or Showtime's Weeds then make sure you do! stay safe, wear a helmet and see you soon. *aylward* A Blog in the life of Aylward
