Movie Review - Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005)

Plot Outline: A bored married couple is surprised to learn that they are both assassins hired by competing agencies to kill each other. Plot Synopsis: A married couple (Pitt and Jolie) are getting bored with their quiet domestic life. What they don't know, however, is that they're both assassins, secretly hopping the world and killing for hire. But their separate lives are about to collide when each finds out their next target is their own spouse. Released amidst rumors of romance between costars Angelina Jolie and soon-to-be-divorced Brad Pitt, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers automatic weapons and high explosives as the cure for marital boredom. The premise of this exhausting action-comedy (no relation to the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock comedy starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery) is that the unhappily married Smiths (Pitt and Jolie) will improve their relationship once they discover their mutually-hidden identities as world-class assassins, but things get complicated when their secret-agency bosses order them to rub each other out. There's plenty of amusing banter in the otherwise disposable screenplay by Simon Kinberg (xXx: State of the Union, Fantastic Four), and director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) gives Pitt and Jolie a slick, glossy superstar showcase that's innocuous but certainly never boring. It could've been better, but as an action-packed summer confection, Mr. and Mrs. Smith kills two hours in high style. Do you want to watch a movie that makes you think?. Go watch another movie, it is as simple as that. But if you simply want to have some fun, give "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" a try. The film starts with a bored couple that goes to a marriage counselor in order to do something to save their marriage. They seem a couple like many others, so immersed in their routine that they hardly pay attention to each other. John Smith (Brad Pitt) is an architect, Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie) works with computers. They have dinner at seven o'clock everyday, and don't talk too much. But... not all is at it seems in their apparently ordinary lives. As a matter of fact, both are assassins working for rival companies. Neither Jane nor John knows about the extracurricular activities of their other half, despite the fact that they have been married for six years. But soon enough they will find out, as both are assigned the same target, "The tank" (an adorable Adam Brody). Will things get worse before they get better?. Can we expect to enter into a combat zone when the Smiths start to solve their domestic issues?. And will we enjoy it?. See the movie, and find out!. What more can I say about "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", so you have more elements to decide whether you will watch it?. Let's see... To start with, this movie has lots of action (guns, knives and bombs included), so if you don't like action movies I don't advice you to choose it. Also, there is sharp dialogue that is surprisingly funny sometimes, mostly when the Smiths are bickering (thank you, Simon Kinberg, for the screenplay). What is more, you can always enjoy Brad and Angelina's on-screen chemistry, that is really outstandingly good. On the other hand, I felt that the ending was somehow contrived, and that some kind of closure was missing. That is the reason why I will probably watch this film again when it is released in dvd, in the hope that the director (Doug Liman) decides to give us an alternate ending that makes more sense. All in all, I really liked this movie. It is far from perfect, but quite enjoyable nonetheless, so I will give it 3.5 stars out of 5. For me, watching "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" was fun. You will probably enjoy it too, if you know what you are getting into when you get your ticket. That is, no profound thoughts, but good entertainment all the same. That was more than enough for me, in this case :)
