US TV strike talks called off

US TV strike talks called off

Saturday, December 8 2007, 11:18 GMT (06:18 ET)

By James Welsh, International Editor

Talks between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and the Writers Guild of America have broken down, it has been confirmed.

In a statement, the AMPTP said: "We're disappointed to report that talks between the AMPTP and WGA have broken down yet again. Quite frankly, we're puzzled and disheartened by an ongoing WGA negotiating strategy that seems designed to delay or derail talks rather than facilitate an end to this strike."

The AMPTP cited six "unreasonable demands" made by the WGA in the most recent round of talks as "roadblocks to real progress". According to the AMPTP, the WGA has demanded that membership in their union be mandatory in the reality TV and animation industries; that networks should be prevented from airing reality TV material that was not produced in accordance with WGA rules; that a "no strike" provision should be ignored, thus enabling the WGA to participate in other disputes; that writers receive a slice of ad revenues; that a third party should determine transaction and therefore residual values, instead of the market; and that the WGA's proposal for new media residuals "could actually cost producers more than they receive in revenues".

The AMPTP added: "These are the terms the WGA organizers demand for ending the strike - money that doesn't exist, restrictions that are legally dubious, and control over people who have refused to join their union."

In response, the WGA's negotiating committee chairman John Bowman said of the AMPTP: "They are holding to their offer of a $250 fixed residual for unlimited one year streaming after a six-week window of free use. They still insist on the DVD rate for Internet downloads.

"They refuse to cover original material made for new media.

"This offer was accompanied by an ultimatum: the AMPTP demands we give up several of our proposals, including Fair Market Value (our protection against vertical integration and self-dealing), animation, reality, and, most crucially, any proposal that uses distributor's gross as a basis for residuals. This would require us to concede most of our Internet proposal as a precondition for continued bargaining. The AMPTP insists we let them do to the Internet what they did to home video."

He added: "We remain ready and willing to negotiate, no matter how intransigent our bargaining partners are, because the stakes are simply too high. We were prepared to counter their proposal tonight, and when any of them are ready to return to the table, we're here, ready to make a fair deal."

Oh my. I have read that they expect the strike to go one till at least summer. Another strike might happen next summer with either the actors or directors.

Big Brother 8

Summer offically begains with the start of Big Brother 8. Today, CBS announced the cast to for their show. For those who do not watch Big Brother, it is a game where the contestants are stuck in a house for 3 months. They vote out a player (or two) each week. The winner of Big Brother gets a half of million dollars. The one thing unique about the show is that fans can watch what goes on the house with 24/7 feeds.

Yesterday, Variety.com released an arctile talking about the new season:

'Big Brother 8' announces cast

CBS show kicks off July 5 at 8 p.m.

CBS is making "Big Brother 8" more interactive than past editions, plotting a twist in which one of the game's players will be controlled by the whims of the American public.

Net's annual summer sudser, which kicks off July 5 at 8 p.m., has also locked in its cast. It'll once again be a young bunch, with most of the 14 players in their 20s-- and the oldest contestant just 44.

And, in a nod to a past "Big Brother" theme in which players were surprised to find out that their ex-flames had been recruited, this year's cast will include a few pairs of players with unresolved beefs.

The biggest twist, however, is a game element called "America's Player." In a nutshell, that contestant will have the chance to win extra sums of money-- but only if they carry out certain actions mandated by viewers via internet or text message voting. Chosen player might be asked to vote somebody out of the house or something more personal, such as flirting with another player. Eye is hoping the twist will give viewers more of a stake in the outcome of the game, in the same way auds who watch "American Idol" get to shape that competition.

Theme for this year's "Brother" house is "Alice in Wonderland," with a number of eclectic touches throughout the pad (think really big beds and tiny chairs).

CBS has high hopes for this year's edition of "Brother," the Allison Grodner and Endemol USA- produced skein that has be-come a summer staple for the net. Its perf is particularly important this year since the net is launching a new fall lineup marked by some particularly ambitious, younger-skewing skeins-- some of which will no doubt be hyped endlessly during "Brother's" run.

That appeal to youth is evident in the makeup of this year's cast. Half are under the age of 25, with one player below the age of 21. Four players hail from the Los Angeles area, and there are no less than three players who work at a restaurant or bar.

Also this year, Showtime will debut the show Big Brother After Dark. The show will air on SHOTOO from Midnight to 3 A.M. E.S.T.

Stargate Atlantis - Sunday

Sunday is one of the most talked about episodes of the season. In this episode, the beloved doctor,Carson Beckett, gets killed. His death has sent ripples though out the Stargate fan. Alot of fans have asked "Why?". I think it is because his death affected us all. He was a well loved. He brought a sense of balance to the team.

Did I liked Sunday? I did really. It had a wonderful story. Everyone had the day off and make plans. Sheppard, Teyla, Weir and McKay all made plans and then have to cancelle them. McKay made plans with Beckett but he cancelled it to spend some time with Katie Brown. When Beckett got killed, McKay blamed himself for the death because if he didn't had cancelled his plans with Beckett, Beckett would still be alive. It make me think that we should live each day to its fullest.
