You turn it on from either to button on console or controller. Hard drive is what stores all your games, pictures and other files. And you can play games without HDD. But even then the console has internal memory. They don't even sell Xboxes without HDD anymore.
Well it's convenient to use, but it usually costs more than boxed copy of the game. And you won't get a nice game box nor printed manual with your purchase. So I only buy boxed copies myself as I want to save as much money as possible and get more bonuses.
I never preorder, since I buy games when they are priced 10-20£, saves a lot of money. :)

But then you have to wait minimum a year longer than everyone else.. I would rather pay the money for games I want. But then again I don't know what your income is like compared to mine :P
For most games it takes less than year. And my income isn't high, true (Being a jobless student :p). :|
Assassin's Creed 2/Dragon Age, don't get me wrong though, because all games I have are quality games, so these 2 would equal to most disappointing games I have bought on Xbox, but they are still quality games. My Xbox came with Pure&Lego Batman, now these games suck. :p
