Now that there has been some time for the hype to die down, I think it's appropriate to look at whether or not Halo can be classified as the greatest FPS franchise to date.
To put aside any bias that people may attribute to me for making this thread, I enjoy a variety of FPS games on multiple consoles. The original Half-Life is actually my favourite FPS ever made, with Battlefield 1942 behind it.
In terms of review scores (here at GameSpot), the core games of the Halo franchise include:
Halo: Combat Evolved: 9.7/10
Halo 2: 9.4/10
Halo 3: 9.5/10
Halo: Reach: 9.5/10
You could also include Halo PC and ODST, both 9.0/10 games.
Then you could include sales, although I don't have the numbers on me, they are obviously very impressive.
The fact that Half-Life does not hold this title is mainly because there are only two core games, with a few expansions (some not even made by Valve). They are also single player orientated games. I'd say another front runner would be Battlefield, but on the other side of the fence, it's a multiplayer orientated franchise.
Halo is able to create both a strong campaign (Halo 2 is the exception), and ground breaking multiplayer. Look at how matchmaking took off after Halo 2 (Naughty Dog even borrowed some of the technology for Uncharted 2), how well their ranking system is, etc.
I'm not even going to go into all the gameplay standards that Halo has set, because that seems subjective, and this is an objective based thread. Who wants to prove me wrong (I don't care for your opinion on best FPS franchise, please back your post up with facts that the majority can agree on).

Halo the best FPS series to date? did you just start gaming this gen or what?
It's easily one of the best. Stating anything else would merely make you look foolish.
