@marsdude: On average, the human body doesn't experience starvation until about 3-4 days without any food. And there are examples of people surviving for weeks without food for reasons ranging from religious to political protest. Obviously there are a million variables to this including your metabolic rate, physical activity, age, how much you've eaten prior, etc. but my original point is that you absolutely DO NOT need 12 meals in a day to survive and you realistically don't need that many in a week. Would it suck? Of course it would...but it can be done.

"a way to support the dozen or so meals you need to consume each day just to stay alive."

lol, this mechanic detail alone just screams excessively onerous. No-one needs a dozen meals in even a week to function let alone survive.

I think people really have the wrong idea about this game. I thought the same thing about it after reading a few reviews and seeing some previews. But now after watching some streams and actually playing it for around 3 hours, I can tell you I have a much different take.

First off, while many of the mechanics are simplified, they are simplified for the better. Take wild encounters for example. What good did they do in the previous main series games? You either caught the pokemon, fainted it, or ran away. The only thing different now is you don't battle and faint it. Instead, you get experience from catching and the tedium of sending out your mon and using a move is gone. The wild encounters actually have more purpose now than before. It's a smart change that's not just lazy simplification. You can tell they thought about these aspects.

Secondly, the entire game is a love letter to gen 1. By that I mean yeah it's colorful and fully updated graphically, but they kept true to the pacing of the original while adding just enough new things to keep the player engaged. The map and flow of progress are the same as gen 1 and I think this was a difficult thing for GF to balance being a 20 year old remake.

It's a good game and I think people need to try it before dismissing it as a watered down Go clone. It's a game I think could really serve well as a bridge between the new Go players and the hardcore main series players if they incorporate trading, battling and the Bank correctly. There's much more here than one might think.

I've found that trolling for wagons around Emerald Ranch/ the Fence can be pretty lucrative especially early on. I usually just hijack a single person wagon then run the driver over or hog tie them. It's a quick $40 trade in at Emerald and once you get good at it, it's pretty quick. Long as no-one sees you, you're clear and even when there is a witness or 2 you can buy your way out of the bounty for ~$20 at the post office.

@csward: The visuals are all hand drawn. The amount of skill, talent and effort required for this is what makes it beautiful. Moreover, the pics above do little justice to some of the more elaborate designs and animations. Trust me, beautiful is an understatement here.

New IP, 3rd person boxing/fighting game with stretchable arms/appendages. Sorry, but the initial learning curve is far from a valid negative criticism. Of course a game such as this is going to take some getting use to...it's never been done before! The test punch version alone deserves at least an 8 for the amount of fun, freshness, and innovation it delivers to today's stagnating gaming landscape.

This guy is not just an ass, he's a moron. Reading his statement is painful. How he even put a resume together and got this job is lost on me seeing as how his writing is a solid sub-third grade level.

Every game since and including Demon's Souls that Miyazaki has had full charge of has been nothing short of brilliance. It's safe to say this one will be no different. We'll get dozens of doubter articles and naysayers in the months leading up and then it'll drop like a 2h R2 Great Club swing onto their domes.
