[May Contain Spoilers]
So here I am. If anyone has bothered to look at my games you'd see something rather interesting, Dissidia has remained my only PSP game in my playing. Why is this? I ask and answer.
For one, I haven't gotten MGS Peace Walker yet and two...
...Simple, it uses an addictive formula that meshes nicely with my mind. Or as you might suspect I might just have fallen deep into yet another Square Enix net. Either way, kudos to the Dissidia developers for such a brilliant game. As you'd expect it's far from perfect in many/some ways with flaws noticable here and there. For example, take this young girl;
Terra/Tina Branford
Now not to say I disagree with her design or abilities, both are quite pleasing aside from being a touch to slow for my liking and some lengthy cast times. What gets me over this young lady is her portrayal in Dissidia. Hold it, before you take your fire and brimstone to me keep healthily in mind that she was only so unsure and hesitant at the start of FFVI.
I grant you, good sirs that she was in such a state due to amnesia and thus her portrayal is essentially true to character in that respect. Yet be it my memory (certainly not my age) but I do not recall a distinct fear of her power. Of course it was horrific and even monstrous but did you see any burning soldiers in flashbacks? Any Magitek Armour? No. My next point is that where did the absolute freaking out over her Esper form go? I mean seriously. We all remember the trouble we had in FFVI regarding that and then Maduin and the rest of it.
My next problem characters, these two fine chaps and their perculiarly sized swords;
Cloud Strife & Sephiroth
With these two, it's a bitter struggle with a complex past involving suspicious hunched over scientists with a bestiality fetish and copius amounts of gene swapping.
Meanwhile, back on topic I present to you my problem.
I heard the story, ease of use because FFVII was the most popular... Cloud and Bishiroth are favorites... etc.
Okay. I can live with 'ease of use' but these two characters in the earlier (roughly start to level 25 / 30) are ridiculously overpowered. Later on this is less of an issue with abilities (such as Kefka's overall repetoir of spells and Ultimecia's Apocalypse) and balancing stats prevailing. But come on... The FFVII crew? Not worth all that buffing early on.
To me this just puts the nail in the coffin for all the other FF games to become as popular as VII in the publisher's eyes. Don't get me wrong as I adore VI and VII is one of my lesser preferred FF titles but even so, why steal so much thunder then proceed to eat the clouds?
My final issues is with one big ugley nasty. The Original big ugley nasty of FF. Yes.
Chaos. .. (Control~!)
It's a fabulous boss battle and I enjoyed it very muchly in both FFI and Dissidia.
My gripe with this..scaley..? Fellow.. Is that he is used material. How many remakes has FFI had now? Yeah. Why not make something new and exciting for us, Square? I understand it might not have been possible but c'mon! At least let us fight Shinryu or Chronodia! Of course I understand it was his summon but what of it? Would you rather fight a recycled four armed lizard demon from time travelling adventures or Apocalypse I Am: Dragon Form Complete Pwn Package? And I can see Chronodia might not exactly move much so good call there but usable as summon in some way I presume.
To be fair I can see where they came from with this one, Chaos is the original FF badguy and meshes well with Cosmos. Fair dues in that respect, I like it but I still think he'd be more use as Garland's special form.
Finally, I have to admit with these major faults bugging me I yield unto Square Enix's PSP ploy due to the gameplay being excellent, I mean you have to admit... An arena game with decent aerial combat with the concept of an FF War materialised AND multiplayer functionality across Arcade and Custom settings whilst still keeping a fair graphical quality plus high quality cutscenes?
Saying that, I will no doubt purchase Birth By Sleep like a rabid fanboy and if rumours hold true, Dissidia 2 to see if the rumour regarding adding the main side-characters (love interests/frequent companion) and FFXIII's Snow & Lightning is real or not. I'm also hopeful for online rooms this time!
Buy Dissida today and comment on the dispute~!
P.S// You may not have as much fun on your own after beating the campaign. Really, get other people around you to buy it.
P.S.S// Oh and the reason Terra is blonde is because in Japan it's considered exotic/impossible so they made her hair naturally green when she imported! Nifty, eh? Why is her hair odd is a stupid question too. It's because she's half Esper, silly people.
