The developers made it so that you die from rad poisoning before you even get close to the door. Unless your character is Chuck Norris then I doubt you'll "discover" it for the XP. Vault 87 is the one location on my map that I haven't been to (I used the Explorer perk and I've been everywhere) mainly because you're not supposed to get to it.

Actually i just got done discovering vault 87, its actually quite difficult and when u finally get far enough in to discover it its actually 500-550 rads per second, i got my rad resistance to 85% (highest it will go even with rad-x) and just ran toward it, i got a medicine skill of 100 and i ran in with 120 or so Rad aways ( minus 150 rads per one used) and left with about 70 left, once u get in and ur rads get halfway (500 rads) go to pip boy and use the rad aways till rads are gone, and repeat till u discover...and do no fast travel out, it will kill u when u arrive where u wanted to go, haven't figured out why, so u have to walk back out also, and when ur out of the rads u can fast travel again...i also find it amazing im 14 and figured out how to discover it faster than most adults could,Alexhenry3's forum posts
