Greetings,
When I woke up this morning, I received four e-mails that caused great concern. I received a Sign-in ID change on my account and three charges on my paypal account via Sony. The ID change e-mail of course had a link to click on if you did not make the changes but it is basically useless (this is the link:http://sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/support ). Being that I recently moved (I haven't logged on or used my account in a couple of months), I quickly reconnected my PS4 and did some research on the internet. I was about to contact paypal and tell them to stop the charge but luckily I came accross an article that stated not to and to deal with Sony personnaly first. Once all of the updates was made on the PS4, I was able to log on (hacker did not change my password) and saw the e-mail address that my account was changed to ( .yahoo e-mail) and I was able to remove my paypal account to my billing. I contacted Sony via chat (seems to be the only way, even if your account is hacked), and spoke to them about my issue.
One of the first things that they asked me is if I had access to my e-mail account, I told them that I had access to the original and not the .yahoo address that was used to change it to. I also told them that I changed my passwords and deleted my paypal linked to the account. He stated that it was not recommended to contest the charge with Paypal. I asked how it was possible for someone to change my e-mail on my account and he stated two things: 1. Either the owner of the account physically inputs their account to another's PS3 console. 2. An owner shares their account information with another player on-line to share download games, add-ons, maps, etc. Both things, I know for a fact I do not do/did not do.
He then assisted me with the refund process and provided me with a reference number and it can take upto 3-5 business days to see the refund. I asked for an e-mail reference that they would not do and also asked how it was possible for someone to change the e-mail on an account? He did not provide an answer except for the two that explained earlier. I explained my concerns:
1: I was able to change my account information from my device (PS4) to my original e-mail and saw the hackers e-mail.
2: What is preventing the hacker to use his/her device from changing the e-mail on my account again? 3: How did this hacker change my account e-mail?
With issue number 3, I looked on their website and there was link to do a password reset and it even gives you an option if you do not have access to that e-mail account anymore, I believe this is where the "hole", "breach" came into play.
After speaking with the manager, he also did not give me any reason about how this happened even though they can see when/how/what triggered the change of e-mails on my account.. The only thing that I feel safe on right now is that I deleted the link to my paypal on my PS4 device and hopefully that will delete any possible links to my account. I am not satisfied with their answer or lack there of to my concerns and I do not like being accused of someone who logs on to other people's devices or sharing my information to friends. Even though they did not explicitly accused me, the reasoning they provide is pretty much an accusation. It is rude to assume and just stop the chat process when a customer is very much have grave concerns about their security.
