Most of what OP is describing is just Rob Zombies art style. And yes, there ARE good horror movies that have been released is the past years. 1 of which is a Swedish film, Let The Right One In. Check it out. Another is, though I have not seen it yet, Paranormal Activity. It looks to be promising.
