PS3 and the Media

Given all the recent negative publicity, commentary, and overall sentiment towards the PS3, I felt the need to rant a little in this blog. Truth be told, I've grown tired of the constant barrage of negativity thrown towards a console that isn't even three weeks old. While many are harshly criticizing GameSpot for the seemingly positive light they've recently portrayed Xbox 360 in, the problem goes much deeper than GameSpot. It's a problem with the media and people in general.

Whether you look at GameSpot, the NYTimes, or any other major publication that has reviewed the PS3, you see the same 'gloom and doom' scenario. The problem is no one is giving the PS3 a chance. I have no problems with doing comparisons to the Xbox 360, after all, the Xbox 360 was compared to the PS2 and Xbox at its own launch. What I have a problem with is everyone expecting perfection and then unfairly criticizing the PS3 for graphical differences or deficiencies once compared to the Xbox 360. Again, we're talking about a system that is still very much in its infancy and such criticism is completely unwarranted and unjustified.

Even more unjustified is the blame placed on Sony. People need to remember that Sony has no control over how ports look. That lies with the developer. It's up to them to fully utilize the hardware and, understandably, they can't do that with the PS3 yet. Much like the Xbox 360, the ports were somewhat rushed and certainly didn't show the system's potential (I'm sure many of you will recall Madden 2006, which lacked features and was graphically weak in comparison to the PS2/Xbox versions). People need to take that into account before jumping all over Sony and proclaiming the death of the PS3, and the PS4 no less, when developers haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the hardware.

Another problem is the unfair association of overhyping the PS3 with Sony. Yes, they most certainly hyped the system up a good deal but people take that too far. Sony never proclaimed that launch titles would look like the Killzone trailer or MGS4, yet everyone expects them to for whatever reason. People hype up their own expectations and, of course, when those expectations fail the blame is shifted back to Sony for "overhyping" the PS3. I think that we can all agree that while Sony certainly hypes up their machines like tomorrow, you can't blame them for overhyping the PS3 simply because launch titles don't look as good as you think they should, regardless of whether the system costs $600 or not.

I think that, ultimately, the problem with this whole situation stems from the fact that Sony has dominated the industry for the last 10 years. People have a natural inclination towards seeing those at the top crumble, much like they have a natural inclination towards seeing the underdog come out on top. Any piece of news that is even somewhat negative towards the prospects of Sony and PS3 gets blown way out of proportion because of this inclination. It's even worse when you read what these so-called analysts think...I'm sorry, but proclaiming the downfall of a system and a company not even three weeks after launch is a bit asinine to say the least.

In the end, I just want one thing: the PS3 to be given a proper chance like the Xbox 360 was and like the Wii is. Let the criticisms die for the time being and take a fresh look at the system in the next 6 months to a year. If we're still seeing the problems we're seeing today, then the criticisms are justly warranted. But I think, if given a chance, we all might be surprised at just how good the PS3 turns out to be.
