Comic Continuity; Madden

I have an interest in comics. Though I should note that it's not from reading comic books as much as movie adaptations and animtated TV series. I'd like to read the books, may even subscribe to a series or two, but what goes on is confusing me. Ever time I see a movie or TV show with some featured character, I go and figure out their background on Wikipedia, it turns out they're not even part of the group (the 1993 fox series X-Men is so different from the actual X-Men group it's ridiculous). I asked on a forum (not these) about jumping in the Superman group, but I didn't get any closer than I am now. And whenever I find out about soem female superhero I may be interested in (don't ask), she turns out to be dead or something. Is there any sort of guide to getting into comic books and actually being able to understand what's going on? I was inspired to copy-and-paste my thoughts when I commented on someone else's blog: I've had a problem with Madden since about 2003 or 2004 (I can't quite pinpoint it). It's gotten so complex now that I don't think anyone short of a football coach can enjoy it. There are like a million things you have to do to prepare before a play and I can't even begin to remember them all. I have some football knowledge, but I go completely blank once those 11 guys take the field and the ball is about to be snapped. This is why I've taken a greater interest towards the NCAA games. That, and the atmosphere--I can say I'm a fan of the Panthers, but I have actually seen South Carolina Gamecocks.
