I absolutely love my Nintendo DS and I can safely say that being in a dysfunctional relationship with a girl for one year paid off, cuz this was my Valentines day present before we broke up!! (And duh, I kept it :D :D)
The tricky thing is that the games are all big hit or terrible miss. Some of the games for DS are unmatched, like legends such as Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, New Super Marios Bros., and Mario Party DS. But...
I was at Best Buy the other day and you wouldn't believe the weird (and crappy) games the DS has to offer. Half-assed games put together in weeks are tossed on the shelves in hopes that some kid will want to buy it because there's a pony on the front or something. I guess its alway's been this way with Nintendo handhelds, but I guess its just a little annoying to have to weed through the trash to find the treasure. Thank god for places like GameSpot, GameFAQS, etc. because otherwise I might wind up buying some P.O.S. game. I don't take the guides as cardinal law, however, because some of my all-time favorites are usually rated pretty low. I always check lots of user reviews because thats always the best way to decide if a game is worth my money.
I can't say that all random and seeminly dumb games will fail, though. My very first PC game with the original Roller Coaster Tycoon. had I been the age I am now (20) I would have laughed and kept walking. Nevertheless, as an 11 year old girl, I thought it looked neat and its still one of the best games i've ever played. I even got my mom hooked on it half a year ago and shes beaten all 3 and still plays during all her free time.
Anyways, yes. Case in point: Good games usually get good reviews but not always, and its impossible to tell when a seemingly stupid game will be a smash hit!
