Well I wasn't saying that the 8800GTS is better than the HD2900XT. I myself prefer ATI products over Nvidia's and I got a Saphirre Radeon 2900XT in my system. I just said that in most VGA charts (including Tom'sH), when FSAA is enabled, and at High resolution, the 8800 GTS mostly outperforms the 2900XT... but by not as much as even 5 frames a second. Human eyes can't see that so I have to trust what the charts say. Anyway IMO they're both great video cards.
If your goal is to have a 2900XT, according to VGA charts it outperforms 8800 GTS mostly when FSAA is disabled. Now, do you need anti-aliasing? The more high resolution you play, the less you need it IMO. at 1600x900 I don't use FSAA but at that resolution, more RAM is required to run smoothly. 512mb is enough. But i'd say that both 8800GTS and HD2900XT are great cards. You should choose the one that cost less. You might also consider buying the 8800 GTS 320MB which is about 80$ cheaper than the 640MB version.
