Games in the RPG genre can't survive without a good story. Gamers play through games like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Mass Effect because of the story. You connect with the characters, relate to them and care about them. Thus, you are motivated to play through the game because you want to know what happens next. You want to know the answers to questions like: What will happen next? Will character X and character Y ever get together? What is this person hiding? Will these nations destroy each other or finally achieve peace? Other games worth mentioning are games like Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid which offer a more thought provoking experience. They really reach into your mind and make you question things you normally wouldn't think about. There are also games like Killer7. On the surface, the story is just crazy. Things happen and you don't know what's going on. It's doesn't make sense to most people. But look deeper, and there are a lot of underlying themes and symbolism.
