@fa11en1134. Interesting, I've been reading your past two posts on this thread. In your reponse to maxwell1197 you decided to denigrate him rather than debate him. Rather than constructively contribute to the debate, you chose to berate and call him a name. That tactic calls your intelligence into question. In another post, you're basically agreeing with those who share your thinking and then you go on to parrot another forum member by helping him "iterate" his point (one with which you agree no doubt) Again nothing new or original contributed by you. You're sounding a little Budge-ish if you ask me. The focus of the debate is on Hotz and whether or not we agree with the author of the story. Is Hotz a folk-hero or is he just a misguided fool? My point is: we're all entitled to express our opinions and arguments here without personal reprisals. If the "kids and uneducated adults" on this forum are too "lowbrow" for your tastes then perhaps you could favor us and yourself by moving to some other forum far far away where you'll find company more to your liking. In the meantime: Peace.

@chromeballz. I see the point you're making but you're over simplifying it. There isn't any comparison between a coffee mug and a PS3 (unless its bricked). You say when you buy a PS3, you get a license to use the PS3 according to how Sony wants their console used. Fair enough. However with the purchase of a coffee mug, there are no such licenses (well except maybe in Libya). Therefore you are free to enjoy any refreshing beverage you like from your new coffee mug (but not your from your PS3)((unless it's bricked)).

@moistsandwich: Your bias is showing. I understand your David and Goliath mentality and I could side with your reasoning but not this time. You forget that the Goliaths should enjoy the same freedoms and rights as the David's providing the Goliaths have broken no laws and are good corporate citizens. It's not really a piracy issue for me but more a matter of what is right and what is wrong and what is lawful and in this case what may have become unlawful. A court will decide that. For certain, Sony did not intend for their PS3 to be an open source platform. I agree, Hotz can't be stopped from hacking his own personal console. Where Hotz crossed the line was releasing his hack to the public. His actions may have wrongfully harmed Sony. Even Sony needs protection from misguided individuals like Hotz. I hope Hotz wakes up soon and grasps the seriousness of the mess he has created for himself.

What Hotz did was just plain wrong. Had Sony wanted the master key to their console released so the masses could run whatever programs they dreamed, Sony would have done so upon launch. The PS3 was not intended to be that kind of platform. Hotz had no right to release the hack. Look at it another way Tom, it's no different than if I obtained your house key, duplicated it, and handed one out to anyone who wanted one. Even if no harm was done, would you be angry at my actions? Would you feel violated? Would you feel that your personal property might be in jeopardy? You'd change the locks then call the cops on me. Hotz isn't the visionary you make him out to be with your comparison to Budge. Budge isn't necessarily a visionary either. You're stretching to make an indefensible point. Certainly Hotz is a smart geek adult but one who made a very dumb decision. This is real life and real serious. Sony isn't his mommy and daddy, and Sony isn't going to just slap him on the hands and say, "Georgie, don't do that again"! They're going to prosecute this kid if and when he returns from his "vacation" in South America. Maybe this is fodder for his upcoming insanity plea! I hope for Hotz's sake he doesn't wind up doing time. In closing, Tom, you have every legal right to protect your property, keep it secure and keep it private, just the same as Sony. Tom, in the future, listen to your gut. It was right all along.

I'm a dad (well over fifty) who plays computer games and occasionally the xbox 360, and the wii. I started playing back in days of pong. My wife plays puzzle games and both kids play games. The dog and cat not so much. Somehow we still have a social life outside of gaming. I still manage to go to work everyday, take care of kids, mow the yard, fix the car, and make my own sandwiches. For us, video games are a form of entertainment. Nothing more nothing less. I'm no match against my son with an xbox 360 controller in my hand but at least my head hasn't exploded.
