I'd have to go with Circle of the Moon, mostly because of gameplay variety with the DSS and game modes. AoS is close behind.

Nope. For a few years I traded in almost all the games I thought I was done with only to wish I could play them again several years later. Ended up rebuying many of them again as well. Between that and the low trade values there doesn't seem to be a good reason to do it.
In terms of total time played, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time at 2000+hours, but that's been over many playthroughs.
In terms of a single campaign to 100% the game, Gran Turismo 4. I've never been able to 100% it after starting a new file, but have sunk 100-200 hrs into each file.
If considering games with a plot and definite end, probably Persona 3. 1st run through was about 110hrs long.
Meh sounds about right. I first played it in the mid 2000's, and for a while it was the only JRPG that I'd ever played without completing (that title now goes to Xenogears). Nothing in the game really stood out as somethingI really liked. Even after beating it and replaying it a few times over the years there's still a long list of RPGs I prefer over it.
Of the fan games I've seen, the good ones include:
Rokko-Chan - A really well made Mega Man fan game that borrows a few elements from the Megaman X series. It's shorter than all the Classic Mega Man games other than MM1, but about equal quality to several of them.
SMB Crossover - It's Super Mario Bros, but playable with a bunch of NES characters. It's fun, but I find the level design in SMB gets boring quickly.
Nezumiman - Another Mega Man fan game. It's easier than most Mega Man games, and has a lot of strange enemies/bosses, but is alright.
I've only played BN1-3, and enjoyed all of them quite a bit. The only one I'm still considering playing at this point is BN5, as I've heard that 4 and 6 were kind of awful.
I'd agree that it's not a great series. The only game I've enjoyed even related to the series is Battletoads vs Double Dragon, and it seems to borrow much more heavily from Battletoads.
Fallout/Fallout 2 come to mind most quickly for me. Have to know quite a bit about the games to be able to do the majority of the sidequests in a single playthough. It's also really easy to make horribly designed characters if you don't understand the stat system.
Mine's Circle of the Moon because of the variety of gameplay options in the DSS system and the difficulty. After having played all of them several times though, CotM had the weakest exploration elements, particularly in the form of unique/worthwhile hidden items.
Aria of Sorrow is a close second. Harmony of Dissonance is a distant third. HoD was still a good game, but is more limited in its replayability than the other games, and is really easy.
I like the people of Quebec, but the politics bothers me at times. I live close to the border, and worked for a farmer in Quebec for a few summers. Never had a bad expereince with the people I talked to while there.
