Mass Effect 2: First Impressions

I have been playing Mass Effect 2 quite a bit in the past week and as I get further into the game and begin to appreciate it's nuances, some of the "faults" become rather apparent. I have to say, the game's difficulty on insane is just that, insane. The AI causes your enemies to act in a highly unrealistic (read: Insane) manner. Often times enemies that have close range to mid-range weapons will often eschew cover and simply walk up to where you are hiding behind cover and shoot you in the face. While the does present a very difficult problem and does in fact make the game much harder, it seems very unrealistic and it makes it very difficult to maintain a suspension of disbelief when your enemies seem to know that it will take many shots to bring them down and that they can simply wade through your fire like it's nothing. In way it makes it seem as though your enemies are saying "Yeah we know that you cant hurt us with that weapon because of the game mechanics, so we are going to take advantage of that fact and just walk up and shoot you in the face." Whereas a more realistic AI soldier would most likely be a little more fearful for it's life. This was a problem that I have noticed in a lot of Bioware games. It seems like that is the their main way of increasing the difficulty, because I have noticed the same issue in Dragon Age. I think that designers make the "nameless horde" enemies behave as exactly that, a throwaway horde that knows and acts like it's expendable. I would like to see some AI that was actually more indicative of a real soldier's outlook. Enemies that realized they were outmatched and retreated when faced with impossible odds. Enemies that fear for their own "lives" and wont simply throw them away willy nilly, unless of course that is done intentionally. If you have a race of mindless alien drones that are controlled by one sentient leader, than it would make sense that the mindless drones would sacrifice their lives for the sake of their master, because he is in control of their actions and wouldn't think twice about sacrificing a drone's life to save his own. However, if you have an army of free thinking soldiers, especially the "Joe Shmo Mercenary" that are popular in games, to me it doesn't entirely make sense that he would be willing to completely throw his life away. That said, Mass Effect 2 is a really interesting game and I have been enjoying it immensely. But like I mentioned, insane mode can get pretty difficult and the new ammo system makes it very hard to use the weapons that you have upgraded only, requiring you to switch to weaker weapons with sup-par damage once you run out of ammo.. This can be somewhat disastrous depending on your situation. All in all, Mass Effect 2's "upgrades" to the game mechanics leave me missing the old system, but it is still workable and it is without a doubt, still great game.
