People who've had these experiences are most likely hallucinating. I know, because I hallucinate a lot (seeing ghosts etc), and it feels pretty real.

I get it sometimes, basically what happens is that your body is still asleep, whereas your brain is still only half asleep. The sufferer usually experiences frightening inability to move with the possible bad dream. For example, I got it and could see "someone" coming towards me, like a shadow and I couldn't move. And I was awake with my eyes open and could see until my body woke up.

I usually break myself out of it now though because I'm used to it.
