Iain Banks is a wonderful writer i recommend The Culture Series, the first book being Consider Phlebas. The Dune series is also another wonderful series you should consider.
If they kick you out before you find a job crash at a friend's house and then when you get a job find an apartment and get a roommate to cut expenses. If your family kicks you out because you can't find a job I wouldn't go back. Then work really hard and raise through the ranks and don't go back.
