I'm sorry you found the sticky confusing. Where did you get lost? What could be done to improve its readability?

As for your options, brands and pricing are likely different in Australia, but as a computer-user I strongly encourage you to consider a separate headphone and mic rather than a headset. Basically, buy a nice pair of headphones, and add either a clip-on or boom mic such as the Zalman ZM-Mic1 (less than $10 US).

Pick a pair of headphones from the list in the Headphone FAQ that fits your budget and is available in your area, clip on the mic, plug both into their respective ports on your PC, and you should be good to go.

Happy gaming,

Boz

Original poster:

If you are still reading this thread, consider the following value 5.1 system, which is likely a substantial upgrade to your existing system:

~$200 - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-696

I would consider this entry level. While the Yamaha is well-reviewed, I think you'll find the quality of the Dayton system superior, and worth the small prince increase.

Beyond this you're looking at a set of speakers from Energy or Fluance, both of which are highly regarded in audiophile circles for offering strong value per dollar. At that point you're looking at the $400 and up category.

Good luck,

Boz

What sticky? And I just mentioned the turtle beaches so ya know what type of headphones even though I said over the ear headphones. And I know their not that great quality compared to other expensive ones.

There is a sticky at the top of the Audio/Video forums titled, "Headphone FAQ." Start there; there are a lot of recommendations of different headphone types, and all of the recommendations are well-regarded both here at Gamespot as well as audiophile sites like Head-Fi. Good luck, Boz

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 are supposed to be excellent. My experience with Beyerdynamic, in general, has always been very good.

Skip the Astros. Nobody wants headphones named after the Jetson's dog.

Happy gaming,

Picky, picky, picky; there are a few headphones out there with detachable cords. You could then purchase a shorter male to male cable without worrying about having to splice. The models escape me, at the moment, so I would suggest you ask the experts over at Head Fi. They'll steer you right.

Good luck!

Read the sticky; it has a lot of suggestions under your budget.

In general, Turtle Beach is not well-regarded for sound quality.

Good luck,

Look for a pair of headphones with a coiled cable instead, then. It will be, functionally, much shorter and easier to store. The Audio-Technica ATHM50 has a coiled cord (the ATHM50S has a straight cord) and the Shure SRH750DJ headphones have a coiled cord, as well.

Good luck,

Skip the Sennheisers. In general, though they sound great, if you've got a head like Sputnik you'll find most Sennheisers have a vice-like grip. I wear the largest size hat available, and my Sennheisers are uncomfortable after prolonged periods. Avoid the JVC HARX models, too.

Consider Grado and Audio-Technica headphones, which have a greater emphasis on comfort. You might be able to find something used on Canuckaudiomart.com, just be sure to sanitize before wearing!

Good luck,

Boz

Guess I'll just wait to afford a better one then. It's going in a small room, so I'm not looking for a big sub.

What about the V1020?

ChubbyGuy40
You need a less powerful sub in a small room, but the size will determine the frequency range it is able to reproduce. I still recommend a 12" sub at a minimum to reproduce the lowest notes of the audible range, even at low power. Good luck, Boz
