For a home theater system, I would reccomend the Logitech z-5500 speaker system, as it's THX-certified, supports Dolby Digital AND dts, and it has loads of inputs to make it compatible with just about everything. it's $400, but this includes the subwoofer so it should be within your budget. i have this surround sound system in my home theater system and it ROCKS!

hey. i have the logitech z-5500 thx surround sound system in my setup, and i have found that the HT OMEGA STRIKER sound card is absolutely perfect. it's capable of outputting in 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, or 7.1 modes. it has 3 stereo minijacks for analog surround sound, and 2 stereo minijacks for microphone and line in, and it also has digital optical in and digital optical out ports as well as a coaxial output. and it's capable of outputting in either dolby digital or dts via the optical or coaxial outputs (whichever you prefer). currently i have my z-5500 hooked up via the optical port in dts mode and it sounds purely awesome. i'm sure your z-5300 will sound great with it too.

well for $1400, you could get an alienware m9750, which is probably the ultimate gaming laptop capable of running just about any game under the sun. but if you really need to keep it under $1200 then go for the iBUYPOWER LX850 [2]. both of those are awesome gaming laptops.

i think there are some monitors out there that would be damaged if they were fed a resolution that they couldn't display, but most have the ability to downsize the image (like your monitor). if your monitor downsizes the image for you, then i wouldn't worry about it getting damaged.

i'm almost positive it will fit. just about every motherboard has transistors there right by the cpu slot, so companies that make cooling supplies make their stuff so that it doesn't conflict.
