I got Fable 2 from Best Buy this past Saturday. I remember when I got GTA IV there and they had more than enough copies for anyone who wanted it in both the normal and deluxe versions, for two different gaming systems. I decided that the extras in GTA IV were not worth the extra price, so I got the basic copy and enjoyed it. Now, I read that the deluxe edition of Fable 2 comes with special armor in the game and a bunch of cool things I like, so I want it. Now I go to get Fable 2, and when I ask about the deluxe edition, I am told they don't have it. So WTF? Who picks how games will be stocked and what games can rot in the dark?
On the off chance I might get lucky I made a stop by the local GameStop just to see if they might have it. They were busy due to a 'buy two used games, get one free' sale. I get in line just to see if they got a copy of the special edition Fable 2. After 20 minutes in line...
Me: "Hi, do you have any Fable 2 deluxe edition in?"
GameStop Employee: "Did you pre-order it?"
(Now, I have a rant about pre-ordering video games that goes here, but you already know it.)
Me: "No"
GameStop Employee: "Well, the special edition was for pre-order only. We did get a few extra copies but I sold the last one to the guy that was in front of you in line."
(I hate GameStop.)
So I walked away with the knowledge that there may be a deluxe copy of Fable 2 somewhere, because if one store got an extra copies then other stores probably got extras too. The catch was those other stores would be GameStops. I Hate GameStop. So I looked at my copy of basic, plain, normal, Fable 2 and thought about how important the extras were to me. If I did find the deluxe version I would have to go back to Best Buy to return the one I already got, and that would mean less time to play. However, I really wanted the unlockable content. So I compromised and called another GameStop.
GameStop Employee2: "Thank you for calling GameStop where, blah blah blah... Can I help you?"
Me: "Yes, do you have any Fable 2 deluxe edition in stock?"
GameStop Employee2: "Did you pre-order it?"
(I HATE GAMESTOP! Enter that same rant.)
Me: "No"
GameStop Employee2: "The special edition was for pre-order only. Is there anything else?"
I hung up.
So, I went home with the basic copy. I'm still happy with the game, but every time I think about not being able to get the version I wanted, I'm a little less pleased with my Fable 2 experience. Most importantly I don't really know who's to blame.
