Dragon Quest IX - best in series!
by Brixtan on Comments
This game is amazing, dare I say, best in the entire DQ series! I've been playing fervantly since it was released a couple weeks ago, finally beat it this past weekend.I was a bit skeptical when I first heard of the latest DQ coming to the DS instead of a current nextgen system, but I am quite pleased with the game as a whole. Having played DQ 8 on the PS2 years ago, this game measures up and in many ways, surpasses VIII in many ways - mainly in post-game dungeon crawling, and gear collecting. By far, my favorite DS game I own!

I can't believe it's been three years since I've posted a new blog...my how time flies. I figure I'll try to commit to posting more regularly, but don't hold your breath. I can't committ to anything long-term that involves journaling.
So I'm in this dilemma - I have more video games than I have time to play them all. My latest accomplishment is that I beat Episode 1,2 and 3 of Doom on the Xbox 360...yeah, yeah, it's an old game. But I'd never beat it (at least not without godmode). So that was semi-exciting I guess. Halo 3 goes down in my logs of recent games completed as well, both on normal and heroic (screw legendary, I don't need achievement points that badly) and Mass Effect (beaten it twice, as both completely good and completely evil). The latter is one of my new favorite video games of all time. I'll probably play through it a third time before the end of the year.
I now have Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Half-Life 2, Soul Calibur IV, and Tales of Vesparia staring me in the face: none of them beaten. On top of that, I am so itching to pick-up Fable 2, Devil May Cry 4, Far Cry 2, Dead Space, Left 4 Dead, and Fallout 3. Where am I going to find the time to play all these games?!?!?!
Damn you XBOX360 for making so many great games! :(
WoW, I hate you
by Brixtan on Comments
One month after deleting my account, I realize just how much of a time sink WoW was. God, it sucked over 30 played game days of my life away.
What's really sad is that no other rpg's are ever going to hold a candle to WoW. I got so bored that I recently started a new game on FFX, for the 3rd time. I might pick up another disgaea-esque strategy rpg as well. But my mind is so numb I can't decide.
Thanks, WoW, for ruining my (gaming) life. I hate you.
Welcome to my new home in Azeroth. I'll return in 4 years.

Welcome to the World of Lagcraft

So I got WoW this afternoon, installed it and was all jazzed to play it only to find out that it's lagging like crazy!?! So I scream at my computer as my character dies, not once, but three times due to lag. It's taking more than 10 minutes to loot a single corpse, almost makes you want to skip getting items altogether.
The blizz kiddies keep saying that all mmorpgs are like this on launch day, but this is no excuse. Blizzard took 4 years to make this game, then had one of the longest beta tests ever (8 months), followed by a laggy open beta which they said "will be fixed by retail", only to have this crap happen??!?!

I own you RCT3!

Finally, all 18 scenarios...beaten. I own RCT3! *dramatic pause*
What an exciting night...now I'm off to bed.
It's Wednesday

I've managed to beat 16 of the 18 scenarios in RCT3, with my latest victory last night. I've got to beat the last 2 scenarios and then I'm done with them. Seriously, it's become a chore to even play that game with all the bugs and glitches, not to mention the drastic drop in fps once the park gets busy. I keep hoping that frontier is going to release their official patch sometime soon because it was slated for release this week. It just makes me angry when my cpu starts choking on fps while playing RCT3 when I can eat Doom3 for lunch with no drop in frames on my spiffy p4 3.2ghz 1gig ddr ram, ati 9800 pro 128mb system, but for some reason, rollecoasters just tax my system into oblivion. *sigh* Looking forward to the following games, most of which are being put on my xmas list.
1. Halo 2: because if I don't own this game, I'll be laughed at my gaming friends
2. Metroid Prime 2: loved the first one, this ones looking even better
3. Half-Life 2: never played the original *gasp* but i can now thanks to the newly updated version included with the game.
4. World of Warcraft: playing open beta now, and it's good (more on that later)
5. Mario 64 DS: which means, YES! I want a Nintendo DS! portable mario 64 goodness! Are you crazy? Hook it up!

World of Warcraft open beta update from Azeroth.
My female warrior is currently level 12 going on 13. The thing I love about this game is that i've only really invested 3 evenings playing it and have been able to accomplish a lot in short gaming sessions. This is something that is unheard of with most MMORPGs. The questing is very well implemented, and I enjoy being able to traverse over to to Ironforge and speak with a dwarf blacksmith about forging an axe for someone back at stormwind. Sweet, I just got 900 xp for doing that. It's such a nice feeling of accomplishment. And best of all, the emphasis on partying is lessoned to some extent, at least for me it is, as I've been solo the whole time. This is a radical change from the likes of FFXI, as anyone who's played it can tell you that once you hit level 10, you better find a party, cuz you ain't getting nuthin done without one. I'm glad that WoW hasn't fallen into this category. The only question left unanswered is whether Blizz is gonna let us open beta testers keep our characters for retail. I hope they do.
World of Warcraft Open Beta

...AND IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!
That's all I can say! Gimmie my warcraft now!!

Seriously, I happened to get into open beta before they closed the sign-ups, so I consider myself fortunate. I've started a female human warrior named BuffySummers on Beta server 18. It's fun, very fun. Graphically it's really beautiful, although the technology is not as far along as Everquest II. It's the artistic edge that I think lends itself to an ultimately more satisfying visual experience. I enjoy the real-time clock, so when it's dark in the game, its dark in real life as well. Although I can see this posing problems for those that need to to day or night specific quests and having to schedule your real life around it...sound familiar anyone? (*cough*animalcrossing*cough*) So far, my character is only level 6, but thats just from one night of playing. I couldn't figure out how to attack for several minutes while being chased by wolves...not fun. Then my character sat down and I couldn't get her to stand back up, so I had to re-boot. Oh the joys of beta. And the lag really is just as bad as its being made out to be, with it taking sometimes upwards of 4 minutes just to pick up some loot from the corpse i just killed. But what do you expect when you load some half-million people onto the servers. It's a wonder my computer hasn't caught on fire.
I hate Monday, but I love videogames.

Here are some of my favorite videogames in no particular order. If you haven't played these gems yet, you owe it to yourself to go out and buy them now!
----------------------------------------
1) Rollercoaster Tycoon 3: who wouldn't enjoy building their own rollercoasters and then riding them in 1st person?
2) The Sims 2: once the expansion packs start coming, this sequel will exceed the first. Graphically superior, and being able to have a lifespan helps you focus on creating a family lineage...interesting genetic experimentation is a plus!
3) World of Warcraft: even though I haven't played it yet, I can't wait to plunge into my alternate identify in Azeroth. SWOOBLE!
4) Final Fantasy VII: best rpg ever, need I say more? I've beaten this game 3 times now, and it just gets better every time.
5) Diablo II: take one part hack-n-slash, mix with 2 parts insane item collection and what do you get? Crack.
6) Animal Crossing: feeds into my obessive collecting habits and the need to horde.
7) Final Fantasy X: i'm a square fanboy, I know it. but this game delivers one, if not the best, storyline ever written. superb.
8 ) Disgaea: I actually favor this strategy rpg over Final Fantasy Tactics, must be the cute anime demons.
9) Warcraft 3: getting schooled on battle.net never felt so good. best RTS game on the market. Favorite race: Elves.
10) Champions of Norrath: Again, if you love Diablo, then you owe to yourself to own this addictive PS2 masterpiece.
11) Splinter Cell: love the original, mostly because I beat it. The sequel is much harder, IMHO, and I suck at on-line play. Xbox version only, please. Graphically the best version.
12) Pokemon Red, Blue: old, yes. but these games controlled many hours of my college life back in the day. still never caught them all, darnit.
13) Doom 3: scariest game ever! turn off the lights, crank up the sound, and prepare to be scared silly. Die, demon scum!
14) Soul Calibur 2: better than the first, and just as addictive. A very deep fighter. Favorite character: Kilik.
15) Mortal Kombat 2: The arcade version rox my sox. Best MK game ever. Babalities and Friendships were thrown in to appease those who claimed its Fatalities were too gory. Favorite characters: scorpion, kitana,
16) Street Fighter 2 Turbo: This is my favorite nostalgic fighting game of all time. I own everyone with Ken. Bring it!
17) The Legend of Zelda: time to flaunt my nintendo fanboy roots. The NES original is still extremely challenging. Skip the sequal, adventures of link, please.
18 ) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: best in the series, classic 2-D action for your PS1. And once you beat the game, the castle flips upside down, twice the fun!
19) Grand Theft Auto 3/Vice City: more fun than any human should be allowed to have. Seriously, did anyone actually play this game for the plot? I didn't, but it sure was fun jacking cars and running over civilians in liberty city!
20) Super Mario World: ah, yes, the sole reason why I lusted after a SNES during middle-school. Arguably the best platform game ever made, and its just as fun today as it was 13 years ago!
