Console Deprived as a Young Man.

My love affair with games goes way back. The first home system I had was a creaky Intellivision knock off called "Leisure-Vision". Wow... that was a bad machine. I swear, the people who made that developed all the software that ever came out of for it too. But, I was just a kid, and my parents, leery of the price of the "real" consoles at the time, bought me what they thought was a good deal.

As the emotional scars of that system began to fade my grandparents, always flush with cash, generously gave me a Commodore 64. I think the unit itself, the disk drive and the monitor was about $1400 Cdn at the the time. But oh man.... How sweet that was! A C= 64! Woot! Naturally, I did nothing of educational value on that and just played a butt load of games.

I think this early introduction to computers coloured my view of the consoles. I mean, all they did was games. Why wouldn't you want the flexibility to do other things? This was a bias I held and carried with me into my PC owning days. Now, in my mid-thirties, I don't feel that way at all. However, I do feel like I might have missed out on some of the great console titles of my youth. For the most part this means Nintendo stuff, and with their virtual console initiative taking off, there should always be an outlet there for me to play some of the old greats. That is, should I want too... and if I can ever find a Wii on store shelves. Jeebus... Where are they all?

My gaming preference still has a PC bias, but I'm no longer a PC only house. With three kids in the house (4 if you count me), we have a couple PS2's in house, and I recently bought an Xbox 360. Again, I'd like a Wii, but I'm afraid my wife will kill me if I bought one of these. At least right now... :)
