The 10 Games I absolutely cannot stand.

Thankfully, the number of crappy games i've played in comparison to good games is small, very small. Thanks in large part to Gamespot. While I don't agree with all of the reviews, Gamespot's frequently cynical outlook on most games tends to give me a very good warning as to what to expect. Sometimes however, does manage to slip through the filter, or I just decided to ignore a review, etc...

10. Star Wars Force Commander -  What in the name of hell was Lucasarts thinking when they made this game? Lucasarts certainly went into an interactive dark age when Episode 1 came out. Thankfully they pulled out of it quickly.

9. Battle of Britain - Weak presentation. Flight controls were extremely akward and distorted. Just a bad, bad, sim.

8. Combat Flight Simulator 3 - See above. Except include "shoddy campaign system".

7. Battlefield 1942 - Never did understand what got so many people into this game. I hated its over simplistic and idiot catering build. Granted, it served as a great template for the greatest mod of all time, Forgotten Hope.

6. Prince of Persia, the Sands of Time - I found the game to be terribly boring. Combat was good but far too simple. And I absolutely despise jumping puzzles. So it figures that I would hate a game built around the idea.

5. Battlefield Vietnam - Most would consider it ironic that I hated this game yet absolutely love BF2142. Well, in case you didn't notice, I hate the early Battlefield setup and game engine in general. Vietnam was just a way to make a bad game worse.

4. Medal of Honor Allied Assault - Games don't get much more typical than this. No reason at all to play after the D-Day mission. Mulitplayer was fun for about 1 day. It got boring fast.

3. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - Did absolutely nothing worth recognition. Was basically a repackaged GTA 3. I wouldn't mind so much if Vice City hadn't already done that.

2. Call of Duty 2 - They hyped it to hell and high water. They were treating like it was going to be the Jesus Christ of video games. To me, it was anything but, in fact, it was terrible. They didn't do anything new to the gameplay. In fact, they took stuff AWAY from it! While CoD1 was fun, and its subsequent exansion were a blast, this was boring. What's worse is that the game couldn't even get its history right! Panzer 2s in Normandy? Rifles that take 2 to 3 shots to kill? All gun battles occuring at ranges of less than 50 meters? You're kidding me right?

1. Medal of Honor Rising Sun - I don't think it's possible for any who's played it to disagree. This is the worst game i've ever played. (Why I didn't listen to the review is completely beyond me.) The levels are the most bland, boring, generic, played out, over used trash i've ever seen. Enemy AI was inexcuseably bad. The graphics were abysmal. Multiplayer was so bug ridden I felt bad even thinking about suggesting me and my friends try it out just to comment about how ****ty it is. Their is no excuse to make a game as bad as this. The only possible explanation is developer laziness. To the max. Seriously, the devs must have been so busy surfing their huge piles of cash from previous MOH titles that they just left programming and writing to a bunch of mentally challenged chimpanzees. I say "challenged" because even a typical monkey could program a better game than this.

The 30 Best Games I've played.

My taste in games usually revolves around two things. Freedom, and interactivity. I love a game with an open world that one can do practically anything in. Those games tend to be my most favored. Although games with a great story and characters can also pull through or games with a unique or interesting combat system. But they are at a disadvantage.

30. Xenosaga Episode 2 - Innovative if convulted combat system. Continued the wonderful story.

29. Call of Duty - The best shooter of 03. Bland enviornments and typical "shoot enemy in your path" action made up forby high production values and cinematic presentation.

28. Final Fantasy 7- Wonderful story line and excellent presentation. Gameplay was limited compared to FF6 though.

27. Prince of Persia Warrior Within - Weak story and awful "baditude" made up for excellent new combat system and still wonderful jumping puzzles and traps.

26. Medal of Honor Frontline - My first foray into the series. Like CoD, effort placed on presentation and cinematic feel were excellent. Even if the gameplay was generic.

25. Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood - Excellent new twist on shooter format. Good presentation, game is bug ridden though. And suffers from framerate drops often.

24. The Warriors - Crappy graphics are only complaint. The enviornment was free and interactive. Anything could be used as a weapon. So many ways to cause havoc and terror so little time.

23. Battlezone 2 - One of the few true RTS/FPS hybrids. Amazing story and gameplay. Unfortunantly plauged by bugs.

22. Ace Combat 4Shattered Skies- Not much going in the way of story and characters. Excellent flight controls considering its a console game. (I am in fact, a real pilot.) Downright kick ass gameplay.

21. Half Life 2 - Extremely good use of physics engine and well thought of enviornments create a generally great game. Even if it retains the typical FPS system at heart.

20. Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast - Incredibly well done and thought out application of Jedi combat combine with FPS elements. Force powers and lightsaber combat are a blast.

19. Command and Conquer Generals - One of the few RTS i've played. So inredibly addictive you can't put it down without having someone threaten you at gunpoint to do so.

18. Star Wars Knight of the Old Republic - Start taking notes George. Your franchise isstarting do out doits own creator.

17. Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask - Great new twists. 3 days till doomsday. Expansive and massive world. Best game of the N64.

16. Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries - One of the defining games of PC gaming. Created the accessible sim that for some reason never caught on to mainstream gamers.

15. Sonic the Hedgehog - The first game I ever played. Didn't get me into gaming, but did make me consider it a hobby or pasttime. Also persuaded me to get a computer faster.

14. IL-2 Sturmovik - Excellent controls and meticulous attention to realism and detail.

13. Halo 2 - Good gameplay and good continuation of story. Gameplay was somewhat generic.

12. Final Fantasy X - Amazing story and characters. Typical gameplay.

11. Metriod Prime - They said it couldn't be done. They said Nintendo couldn't turn Metroid into a successfull FPS. They were horribly wrong.

10. Mechwarrior 3 - Would have been trend setting were it not for the fact that sims pretty much died after MW4.

9. Star Wars Battlefront 2 -Battlefield formula + Star Wars = Teh win.

8. Jane's WW2 Fighters - The game that convinced me to be a pilot. Nuf said.

7. Halo Combat Evolved - One of the greatest FPS of all time. Untopable kickass gameplay. Decent story for an FPS.

6. Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance - The best and final true rendition of the combat style. The last truly great Mechwarrior. Everything since it has been insulting. *cough*Mechassault*cough*

5. Star Wars TIE Figher - If Sonic the Hedgehog introduced me to gaming, this is the game that got me into gaming. No better sim. Never will be either.

4. Battlefield 2142 - The best mulitplayer game ever. Early version bugs and problems quickly being squashed. Gameplay has been worked to into perfect balance and style.

3. Mercenaries Playground of Destruction - Lives up to its name. Squeezes the last bits of life out of the growing old GTA formula.

2. Xenosaga Episode 3 - Best RPG i've played. Good cast of characters with a great, if convulted story.

1. Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis - What can I say about OFP that has not been said before? To call it "genious" or "masterful" would be insulting. Our human tounges cannot pronounce words great enough to describe this god amongst games. Open world, open gameplay, 40 weapons and vehicles, simulation enviornment with squad control and "do what ever you damn well please" map editor. The precursor to all you see now and the true start of last gen in 2001.

My Favorite Movies, Part 3

Now onto Family/Comedy movies. You will probably notice this list is short. Mainly because, well, it takes alot for a movie to get on this list.

Top Secret-

Made by the same crew that did "Airplane" (although overshadowed by the latter's success) I couldn't stop laughing at this movie from start to finish. The gags were amazingly hilarious and random. The movie skillfully picked apart the cliches of old war movies and satired them perfectly. Their has been no movie since this one that has made me laugh so hard.

A Goofy Movie-

And what makes this movie more special to me than say, the Little Mermaid? Or Aladdin? Just because. Can't say why, and don't really care to either. Of all of the movies Disney has ever made, I just liked this one the most. For one thing it's an excellent and realistic portrayal of 90's culture, especially high school culture. Which the movie nailed spot on. And while Mickey and Donald have lost their charm over the years (Mickey I never had much love for, Donald's new voice actor has so far been doing almost too good a job with him.) Goofy is still the same master of slapstick comedy today that he was 40 years ago. Roxanne was an interesting character. I for some reason ended up hoping at the end of the movie that she be re used in Disney some way. We can only hope for the future I guess.

Team America World Police-

A hilarious and surprisingly well balanced view of world matters. I couldn't help but love this movie. I especially liked its satire of Hollywood, showing thankfully that the South Park boys are immune to the "Hollywood Effect" just as Rodriguez was with Sin City. One of the few comedy movies I have hoped will one day recieve a sequel.

My Favorite Movies, Part 2

Now for the Action/War genre of film making.

Saving Private Ryan-

Unmatched in it's gritty and realistic protrayal of World War 2 and the D-Day landings in paticular. This movie is simply the greatest war movie ever. Nothing, with the exception of Black Hawk Down, comes close. One of my complaints about the movie though is that it failed to show any of the British or Canadian solider whom of which also fought courageously on the Hell of D-Day. But hey, the movie centered on characters. Not armies. The characters were American. Oh well.

Black Hawk Down-

Want to see things from the eyes of the soldier? This movie practically drops you into the shoes of the men fighting in the Mogadishu. AlthoughIfeel Ihave to address my problems with certain criticisms of the movie.

A. Critic: "The Somalians were portrayed as nothing more than blood thirsty killers!"

Now ask yourself. What would a soldier think of them were he there? Would he take the time wonder if his enemy had a family? Or friends? Hell no! When your fighting, you don't have time to view the world from the shoes of your enemy! You just fight! The Somaliansundoubtedly thought the exact same way!

B. Critic: "Their was alot of politics and occurences going on that led up to this event! Why aren't they shown?!"

Because BHD is an analysis ofthe battle. Not the entire circumstances surrounding the crisis. And once again, when your a soldier, you usually don't concern yourself with the politicsof the higher echelons! It's stated right in the frigging movie. "Once that first bulletgoes by your head, politics and all that **** flies right out the window."

Pirates of the Carribean Curse of the Black Pearl-

Once again, another movie that is carried mostly by the stellar coolness of a single character. (Quite obviously Jack Sparrow) Depp excelled in his portrayal of the whily Captain. And rightfully so. The action sequences are fast and powerful. And the witty dialouge on the script is pure genious. While the plot may be one of the simplest thing's I've ever taken the time to listen to, once again I can say that a movie doesn't alwaysneed to have a headache inducingplot in order to be good. Hell, less plot depth allows you to concentrate more on the action and justhave some good olfun.

Sin City-

Frank Miller's graphic novels brought to life. This was quite simply a smoergeousboard of entertainment. The plots don't require much complexity at all. As like Serenity, the characters drive the movie. (Although it would be unfair to leaveout the combat which was also great.) Miller's intersting style of color and illustration was wonderfully carried over by Rodriguez. (And hats offto Mr. Rodriguez as well. I commend the actions he took after the damneddirector's unions tried to cut his and Miller's dicks off. Thankfully, Rodriguez has shown that their are some people in Hollywood with the balls to go against the norm. Espiecally when that norm is made bythepompous celebrities of Hollywood.) This movie was a cinematic masterpiece and a hell of alot of fun.

My Favorite Movies, Part 1

Starting with Science Fiction movies, of which, are my favorite genre in the movie industry. A genre that is often mistaken for fantasy. All to often I have seen fairys and wizards and knights in movies that have been labeled, for some mysterious reason, science fiction. But enough complaining about termology. Lets get on with my list of movies. (One day when i'm in a bad mood, i'll post the movies I hate.)

Star Wars-

Ah yes. Star Wars. What can I say about thee that has not been said before? Star Wars is not simply a movie. It is, the movie. The quintessential movie. While anyone can disagree with me on any other movie i'm about to post on this list, I have difficulty understanding anyone who could possibly hate the original Star Wars. Of course, I usually can just chalk these people up as crackpots. As they tend to put movies like "You Got Served"and "Fast and the Furious"on their favorites list.

Star Wars plot is deep. Yet not so deep that one has to sit and ponder for hours about the movie. It is the perfect balance of complexity and simplicity in a movie plot. With stunning spiecal effects thrown in.I first saw Star Wars when I was 4 years old. From the first opening seconds of the movie I was completely hooked. And when I found out their was more. I simply couldn't wait. And HAD to see the rest.

Serenity-

The movie continuation to Joss Whedon's brilliant but short lived TV series. Once again, the movie manages to strike that perfect spot between complex and simple plots. It is comparable to, but not similar, to StarWars. The entire context of the series as well as the movie is quite simply, "If Han Solo and the Millenium Falcon got their own show." But unlike Star Wars, Serenity receives little aid in terms of speical effects, (despite how well the movie looked, the series was always on a small budget) and reliesmostly on it's diverse, interesting, and entertaining characters. With the rest of the power coming from the intersting universe.

The Matrix-

Ruling out the two miserable sequels, (of which who's existence I do not even consider) this movie was hell of alot of fun. However, I like the movie mainly for it's speical effects and oh so awesome fight scenes. Now many people would complain at my lack of respect for the story. But they can quite frankly shove it. I found the movie's plot to be somewhat contrived, and a little over done. However the amazing fight scenes and effectsmore than warrant a watch.

The End of Evangelion-

Quite literally the end of Anno's groundbreaking anime series. Many felt that the original ending to the series was extremely disapointing. And as a result, some fans actually sent death threats to Anno over it. (This is terribly moronic and makes me embarrased to live amonst the people on this universe. Thethought that people actually threatened Anno's life over a TV show is, believe it or not, more fear inducing to me than even him. It's times like this I look back at John Lennon's murder, and realise that I was not halucinating. People acutally have the nerve to kill over media.) But as for the movie itself. I found the plot to be entertaining, (althouth I hope you haven an I.Q. over 100, it requires quite the pondering)and the final fight betweenAsuka and the mass produced Evas simply being the greatest anime fight scene of all time. The only aspect of this movie I can bring myself to hateis the character of Shinji Ikari himself. God, I so want to just exist in his universe long enough to yell into his face, "CHEER UP EMO KID!"

Titan A.E-

It was brutalized by the critics. I picked up the DVD as soon as I could (like I said, i'm always looking for a good sci fi) and was stunned at what i'd missed.I found the movie to be surprinsingly entertaining and opento all members of the family. Even my cousin who has never seen a family movie in his life enjoyed this. Isthe plot weak? Yes. Is it full of holes? Yes. But is it still fun? Hellz yes.

The Chronicles of Riddick-

It hasn't got much going for it the way of storylines. But it doesn't need that. Riddick alone carries the movie. As he isquite simply a badass. Is he your average cheesy action hero? (Or better yet, anti hero.) Yes. Butis he just awesome? Also yes. Now many will deride the movie for it's lack of plot and characters, but these people honestly need to lay back and calm down. Pull that stick out of your ass for once. And you might just have some fun.

Star Trek 2. The Wrath of Khan-

Let me get one thing clear. I hate modern Trek. Everything since TNG has sucked ass. All of the recent series have succeded in doing nothing but alienating me. Espically the oh so bad Enterprise. When Star Trek 6 was released, I saw lines streaming out of the theatre going over a mile down the street. When Nemesis was released, hardly a whimper could be heard from the 1 or 2 people that attended only because they had a few dollarsburning a hole in their pockets. Oh how the mighty have fallen. And all I can do is look back on the good ol days of TOS and the first 6 movies. And realise that those good times, are over. Star Trek 2 was a very good movie. Even non Trekkies can enjoy this flick. The whole "Hunt for Red October" in space concept is applied quite well. And this movie has some of the best ship to ship fight scenes in Trek history. (Some of the only ship to ship fight scenes in Trek history.) Khan himself is a devious villain. Ricardo Montalban is a wonderful actor and brought the part of Khan to life with a skill and grace that can never be matched.
