I'm not sure what tutorial you were following, the end result blends far too much with itself. The character could almost be part of the background as it is. Other then that, the text would be a lot easier to read if it stood out more. I went through a blending phase when I when I was new to Photoshop and it really did not reflect well, lack off feedback had me going back to the same styles for a while unfortunately.

I hope this feedback can get you on the right track, focus on your central theme before deciding what to do with any image. My current signature is a blended style but I've givin the focal point a large area and easy way to stand out and get the eyes.

Oh and by the way if anyone could give me an opinion on my Avatar that would be nice, he is the new Logo for my "Viral Vacation" themes.
