oh and in answer to the thread. 1. Slayer

2.Megadeth

3. Metallica

4. (waaay down) Anthrax

That said, Testament trumps all four.

To the people saying Metallica isn't thrash....um, what? If they aren't thrash, what are they? The sheer amount of influence they've had on thrash is immense.

Paladin_King

Metallica WAS thrash. They started there, and yes, they've had an astronomical influence on thrash metal. But they are not quite so thrash now. Go back to page 5, 10 posts from the bottom. That's my first post, and it explains what Metallica was and is. And those are not solely my words. They are paraphrased from James' own opinions.

Also, all you Metalli-cats out there, Death Magnetic may well be the last studio album we get. Lars himself has said that this album may well be the death of the band, as they are just not able to keep up with it repetitiously like they could when they were younger.

[QUOTE="vlin1108"][QUOTE="cousin_eddy"] Again don't mock what you obviosuly don't understand. Your musical ignorance knows no limits. When you can play the scales Kirk Hammet can or at the technical speed of Jeff Hannemen then yes, you can mock metal. But until then you are wasting your time.Paladin_King

So now I can only know if something is done badly only if I do it myself too? Maybe I should jump off a cliff because it couldn't possibly hurt that much; yeah, I'm being too ignorant and judgemental about jumping off cliffs. I might actually enjoy it! Trash metal would be the equivalent of that in CD format.

Honestly, why do you do this in literally EVERY metal thread that comes up vlin? I swear, almost every thread in which metal is brought up, you instantly dive in head first with the same ignorant opinions, time in and time out. Frankly, it's starting to get a bit trollish through the sheer repetition. If quick scales, sweep arpeggios, and technical riffing is "breaking the guitar" well....forget it.

Also, as far as vocals go, thrash vocals are actually often quite similar to/based on punk rock vocals. You're "Screams and growls" are death metal/black metal, not thrash metal, generally speaking. Also, even then, vocals are used for mood and are employed more as a percussive instrument, where rhythm and timber is the key consideration, as the guitars carry the lead sound instead.

That being said, I do agree with your reply to cousin_eddy's post. I've always hated that argument, as it's always been completely stupid. Yet despite this, people do it time and time again. How many noted film critics have ever made films, let alone films the size/quality of those they are often reviewing? How many literary critics have written prize-winning books? How many video game reviewers have made games, let alone AAA titles?

It's just a moronic argument. But while I can't say that you're opinion is invalid due to your not playing/making music/metal/whaver, I can say that it's invalid due to your obvious lack of experience or knowledge regarding the musical genre that you repeatedly need to slam. I can take a negative stance on hip hop because i've heard a lot of it, underground or mainstream. The same goes for punk rock. How much metal have you heard? How much do you know about metal vlin? Considering the substance of your continued posts regarding metal, i'm going to go out on a limb here and say "not much." By the way, did i ever tell you that i think The Great Gatsby is a complete piece of crap, unoriginal, uninspired, and vapid? It's just a weak novel. It's just the same old, boring modernist themes that go nowhere, and how many ways can you do that? I mean, I've not really read the novel or anything, but you know, it sucks.

Bravo! Well put, brother!

In how many creative ways can one scream, growl and howl while breaking the guitar?

vlin1108 - maybe thrash metal isn't your bag, but keep in mind that all thrash metal isn't just screaming, growling and howling while breaking a guitar. Thrash metal is a sub-genre in a larger picture. What you've described is more along the lines of death and black metal, bands like Abnormality, Slipknot, Dehumanized, Cephalic Corpse, etc...

cousin_eddy - no, vlin1108 shouldn't be so quick to be so prejudicial, but can you play the scales like Kirk Hammet or at the technical speed of Jeff Hannemen? Can you shred like Joe Satriani or Yngwie Maalsteem? You criticize rap and hip-hop in your explanation, but can you rap like Snoop Dogg or Lil' Wayne? You don't like rap and hip-hop, therefore you say it has a lack of musical creativity and talent, but if you talk to Snoop's fans, they'll tell you he's the **** If you ask them about Jeff Hannemen or Kirk Hammet, they'll say the exact same thing about them that you've said about rap and hip-hop.

To create any form of music, whether it is liked or not, takes a certain modicum of talent. I don't like rap and hip-hop. I don't like classical or opera. But they all have a certain modicum of talent. Anyone, regardless of how fat and ugly they are, regardless of the wierd clothes they have on, that can hit a high-C deserves respect. No, I can't rap or play Beethoven or hit a high-C, but it's human nature to mock and make fun of what you don't like. I get paid to do it.

Coldplay's music is anything but boring or generic...

sAndroid17

Says you? Sounds like boring background music you would hear in a restaurant.

nah its worse than that! boring elevator music... if that! go Joe!

I don't know if I'd call them elevator music...more like that crap your dentist tries to pass off on the CD when he's drilling on your head because he figures your so damned drugged you won't notice that it's actually Michael Bolton when you asked for Metallica.

What? That's a no-brainer. Joe Satriani makes Coldplay look like your 3-year-old cousin playing with pots and pans on the kitchen floor! Just compare Satriani's Satch Boogie8) to Coldplay's Viva La Vida.

Okay...officially? Metallica is a killer band. One of the forerunners of modern metal. Most modern metal bands list Metallica as an influence. But they're not thrash. They were when they released No Life Til' Leather and Kill 'Em All, maybe even Ride The Lightning, but now they are heavy metal. Nothing less, nothing more. Just listen to ...And Justice For All or better yet, Death Magnetic. Megadeth...another good band, but not thrash. You can thrash to them, but that doesn't make them thrash metal. You can ride a skate board while listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, but that doesn't make them skate music. Megadeth commercially never saw the success that Metallica has seen. Fan base is smaller, too. My opinion? Earliest Metallica, Pantera, Slipknot, Five Finger Death Punch. I'm not a fan of Slipknot, but they are definitely thrash metal. They are dark thrash metal. Speaking of dark metal, I was once told that Pantera is a satanic band. My son kinda likes their sound, and I have no problems with my son listening to metal, as I'm an "old skool" metal-head. Any validity to that statement?
